You have line weight on the character, but the hatching makes it look sloppy. Slow down and place the lines deliberately. I have to put on music and remind myself to zoom out, look at the whole image and try to approach it in a meditative manner.
You can use the hatch patterns to show forms as well, like in the folds of the cloth. Flattening shapes with a 'fill' of straight lines works well like an atmospheric haze or if you want areas to blend together. But your hatch patterns seem to look arbitrarily drawn.
I just finished pic related a few minutes ago. Granted, it is a different style of hatching and look than your image, but I think the advice is sound. Still working on finding the technique myself.

It's clear that you used a reference for the skull, which is good and the only way, but be carefull with the proportions and consistency of construction. Even though I dont know which specy is that animal, I feel like the nose is too small and it looks overall too round and smooth for a skull. Don't bother with my redline if it doesnt fit your reference, it's just to show that your drawing is a bit flat

When it comes to the rendering, Dont overload the image with lightsources, I could not even understand where the green underlight was coming from. Using soo many light just makes your work of keeping a consistent rendering more difficult. I usually work with one light source and at the end I add a rem or extra light(like the butterflies)
The white top light is too strong and you end up working with those ultralight color that hurt my retina.
And on the skull, try to work from big to small. You're trying to render each segment at a time and you end up with all these little brushstrokes(I dont know if I'm explaining that)

Extra stuff that i forgot
-I feel like he's too much of a long boi, but it's not a great problem and maybe i?m wrong
-you should integrate more the skull with the body, like adding hair to the skull and shit
-The ears should go out from behind the eyes (like in the redline)

LET'S MAKE /IC/ GREAT AGAIN!

Thanks for the crit! I really love how you textured the fur! And pretty much all else. (What brush did you use?)
The reference I used was a fox skull I have next to me. As for the light, the reason it's all over the place it because I couldn't decide if I wanted backlight or light coming from the front right. So it's both. It's one of the things that made me put down the pen for a few weeks as I got tired of dealing with/looking at it.
I will take your crit into consideration and do a paint-over.
Do you have a blog?

I cant remember where I got the brush I used, but for what I've done I could have used any, I just chose a random mid-soft brush.
Maybe you have it around. It's good for blocking because it doesn't make hard edges, but rather random soft edges, but if you want to render deeply and detailed you better get some hard-edge brush.
Also, I can understand that it'd be hard to overpaint this all over again for you, so I'd recommend you to do another drawing and apply what I've said, specially If you got tired of this one.

14 months since I started realism. That's my latest portrait, based upon an oil painting called The Pink Rose by Charles Amable-Lenoir. Yay for furry stuff.

What I find most helpful for me is to lay out the base colors and use a Multiply layer to add shadows that are a few shades darker. Then I replace the shadow's blackness with a color that I feel works best with the painting and then manually paint from there. I'm still learning how to digitally paint but it's definitely a fun method.

As a single artwork it doesn't tell a story, and as a character illustration it lacks finish.

To explain the former point, look at book jackets: they evoke a place and actors within it, not just random angryguy.

For the latter, there needs to be another revision of highlighting, cloth detail, fine work on the hair, blurring or fixing of the shoe, to make it work as a character piece. Your modelling is sound within the context of the radical foreshortening, helped, admittedly, by the clothing, but that's fine - its the character. On closer inspection, I might bring the ear out and up a bit, but the expression/eyes are so exaggerated its not a point worth emphasising.

I use Krita, which is similar. At the very least, I use 3 layers: the base colors, the multiply shadow layer, and a third layer where I just paint over everything based on the base and shadows. I also tend to use a lineart layer (which is usually a scan of a sketch) to help guide the process and paint over it.

some points where you can easily see you've made mistakes: head is too big, limbs are too thin, butt too small/ not the same curve, the curve of the left hip to the thigh (at the waistband of her shorts), back band of the sports bra, pay attention to how clothing can give you hints at form. i would suggest nailing your proportions and only working in lines (no shading) until you get them down. you've put effort and time into shading, but since you have so many errors with proportions, you'll have to redo areas anyways. take a little more time to plan.

need to learn to draw first, but since you want to focus on painting in color I'll try to give some advice out

You're approaching color in the wrong way.
Right now all the colors are the same hue, and you need to think about temperature of the lighting.

Say we've got a base material floating around in space with no lighting.

If we add a lightsource hitting one of the planes of the object, the colors will shift towards the temperature of the object. This will basically end up like (warm lighting = cool shadows, cool lighting = warm shadows).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErI7gIWzxlY
https://youtu.be/MVafJfV5xhI

Another thing- as you work in color you should be remembering to keep values from falling apart:
http://www.artofscholes.com/checkingvalues/

Fianlly, a minor nitpick but i find its nearly impossible(for me) to observe good values/colors on a pure white background.

>>3191158
think you're spot rendering a bit too hard, figure the body out first.

I personally like the super muted values but right now your darkest darks/focal point end up around the lips instead of the eyes (more common focal point in portraiture)

curious why you were looking for critique when the torso is that unresolved, seems people will either nitpick the face or point out the torso.

Is it just a random sketch or do you have some sort of a setting/world in mind for the character?
I would also suggest you create a moodboard for technological and mechanical stuff that is less common to draw inspiration from there instead of the popular
>iphone with wires
design philosophy so popular with robots right now.
Also his silhouette is not that interesting to be honest, it just seems to be a generally humanoid shape with his back bent inwards.

Stick to pencil drawing for a bit instead of inks. Easier to fix errors. Don't forget your paper isn't an infinite canvas. Define where you want your drawing to be from the start so you don't end up with composition errors like cutting off heads and hats unintentionally. It helps me when I create a frame on my paper before I start, like a comic panel, so I know what my top and bottom parts are. It's much easier to add shit after you establish a point of reference on your canvas.

Lines have a direction for a reason. They're used to guide your viewer's eye and to showcase light and form. Right now you're quite directionless. I struggle with this as well, to be honest. If you want to see a master of inking that uses heavy lines you should check out Sergio Toppi.

Finally don't be lazy when you draw. Every line matters. Know what you want and where, so I don't have to look at your eagle's ribbon going over its lined face.

Do a lot of black and white studies, where you simplify forms. Mike Mignola is a very strong artist when it comes to this, to grasp how contrast should be used when inking.

>> No.3196257

>>3196249
Thank you. And yeah my main weakness in my laziness, I really need to stop rushing this shit. And to be honest I don't even like inking all that much, I just like hatching lines a lot and in ink it looks a lot better than in pencil. Inking makes me fucking anxious exactly for the reasons you describe. I tend to take too much time on long lines and they become jiggly and ugly while with hatching I can't be bothered to take my time with it like a smart person.

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys. Coming back to this thread -and looking at my drawing again after almost a week of not doing so- I can totally see what you're saying, and I can also see some more stuff I hadn't noticed myself. It's about looking at it with fresh eyes. There's always that potential problem for art, and I don't know if any of you guys know how to fix it besides good old "flip the canvas", but I wanted to talk a bit about this and see what you guys think/do about it. For example, I swear the the sword looked so correct all this time, but now I look at it with fresh eyes and I can see it so clearly that I kinda want to 3D-print it and stab myself with it. And now I see issues like that everywhere else, the ear, the foot, the hair, some of the proportions etcetera. Are any art books adressing that kind of thing? or are we expected to just spot the flaws as we keep on gitting gud and rely on time breaks and flipping the canvas? sorry for the mini-rant, I wanted /ic/'s opinion on the topic.

Also I can't believe someone remembers me for that Dicaprio portrait, that's pretty cool, I'm glad to see the same anons are still coming here somewhat regularly.

Overall looks good. Nice linework, clean blending, really cool lighting setup. The lined version is much stronger now, but that may be because you aren't done painting yet.
The kid's pupils clash with the rest of the style. All the lines are clean and the rendering is smooth, but you have these crude pupils and the monster's eyes have an iris and a pupil, but the human kids don't?
One other thing is the two kid's perspective. At their feet, they stand on the same plane shoulder to shoulder, but at their heads red hood kid is standing in front of brown hair kid. If you move brown hair kid more behind red hood kid, not a lot, but a bit of clipping, it would also sell his mood and add some more character.
In the thumbnail, the value of the kid's bodies blend into the monsters body putting them in the same space. Increasing the range on the kids or decreasing the range on the monster would separate them.
When you are satisfied with the painting experiment with some texture brushes, not so much as to leave the cartoony look. But, enough to add some grit or dirt the environment or the monster. Don't forget to bring those slimy drool strands to the top of the line work, they clip behind the lines on top monster's mouth.

Using the levels window you can check your value range, one tips I've heard many times is to stay away from pure black or pure white. Use them very sparingly in places where you want the most detail or highest contrast. It's a very deep subject, but is worth learning well and colors become easier (so I've heard) when you can control your values.

I like the way each one has their own personality, but the colors used are very ugly

it looks like you're decent at rendering some forms but why are you so bad at everything else? I think you need some direction and you could be pretty great, but this looks like a collab between a decent artist and cwc.

Learn to paint values, it's weird because you kinda did them decently with some characters like the girl in the top left, but then you have like the 4th dude on the bottom row, with so little contrast and boring values that you'd think you are trying to hide him or something. Remember this: Contrast leads the viewer's attention. Push your values, make the lightest parts lighter and the darkest parts darker. Take the pic I attached and zoom it out, notice how the right version pops out a lot more than the left one.
But anyway, hopefully I get the point across somewhat, I still recommend you to look at videos by other people that explain it better than I do, in particular I recommend that you search for "Swatches Art fundamentals: values" on youtube.
Certainly you have other problems with your drawings apart from values, so I recommend you just generally keep learning all about art fundamentals and just keep practicing.
Anyway good luck and btw the chick in the bottom right is very cute.

use a bigger brush, more water. focus on the bigger shapes of light and shadow. practice for longer on something simple like the bowl of fruit next to some natural light.

you're not ready to give critique. you're polishing turds. hiding poor drawing skill behind heavy handed hatching. i would stick to pencils for a bit. really think about perspective and proportion before laying down finishing strokes. i'm not saying this to shit on you. you have some skill and feeling for drawing. just don't get ahead of yourself.

torso way too long. you need to finalise the anatomy before refining and rendering. bite the big bullet. and please no textured brush shit or whatever that is at the top. she looks hot though
