pupils are a bit crooked. the shading on the head is p rough, I'm sure you can get more nuance out of that. the darkest shadows are pretty uneven, the wrinkles between his eyebrows shouldn't be the darkest thing on his face. the highlights should only be for emphasis, don't over-do them. instead, add some more depth/variation to the shadows, or use the white more evenly as a toner. right now it just looks like he's sparkling or really sweaty. ofc, perhaps he was super sweaty, but it doesn't come off as intentional

Guys I'm going on vacation in a month and I want to take a sketchbook. Usually I bring a binder full of copy paper but I want something a little nicer.

The mediums I use are mostly ink and marker, with graphite only for guide lines and maybe a bit of colored pencil. Mostly cartooning and technical sketching, although I'd like to spend a day drawing horses on my uncle's ranch.

Basically, I want smooth, white paper that won't bleed through like a pig.

Any suggestions?

I've tried too, but the vast majority here are shitposting, trolling, or tryhards who like to bully other people. This forum is not a healthy one for learning anything, when at least 75% of the "advice" is pulled straight out of some person with no experience or knowledge's ass. Some of the "advice' literally makes me sit her with my mouth open, speechless, that someone would post that.
I still try to help the ones who seem serious, but it's like fight back the tide with a bucket - the flood of auts and neckbeards is too great to overcome - especially since most of the posters here just want to draw porn.

Not even remotely true. Anyway, the best forum for learning art is a studio, in person, with other artists. Once you've experienced it, you realize how meaningless this forum is, and why so little real advancement is made here.
Like I said in another thread, this forum is like the IT department decided to make an art club, with no outside guidance or teaching, and they're making up what they think art is as they go along.

If you're serious about studying art, this is the last place you should be. The most you'll get is stuck in a loop drawing boxes and copying Loomis for ten years, because the frauds and try hards here don't know how to advance from that.

I'm considering getting a marker pad (that exact pad) but it doesn't seem ideal to use as a portable sketchbook.

It seems like I can't get a straight answer on marker paper though. Half the time people say it's perfect for markers, the other half they say it's terrible.

Use a softer pencil; 4B-6B. Break up your piece into 3 values. Determine and set your darkest value (from life, the ref or imagined) on the page and gauge the other values from that baseline.
You can use lineweights in conjunction with your hatching to set the values and their differentiation.
Here is an example of using multiple value ranges for focus and back/foreground differentiation.

The foreground linework is well executed whereas the overall composition and value distribution is lacking. The eye is drawn to the darkest areas and one of them is a indistinct charred mass next to the cannon.
The perspective needs work. Level off the horizon line and the brick wall is off.
Drawing beams of sunlight is not a good idea. Your light sourcing and shadows are weak and inconsistent. Be cognizant of your light source and its effects on your masses and their resultant shadows.
Try to keep these things in mind when working; if you're overwhelmed focus on one issue until you feel more comfortable with it and move to another next drawing.

Sketching moving people, mostly faces, and heads. Recently started using this exercise and noticed improvements to all other areas of my art. At first the exercise was very difficult, but then some strange hand-eye-visualcortex stuff started happening. Try to make a habit of this three or four times a week. Anyone have suggestions, or critique.

get a metal binder clip and clip it on a stack of paper as much as it can hold. The thickness of the paper stack will make it comfortable to draw on, rather than one layer of paper on some hard surface.

Your faces are relatively strong, and its clear you've focused a lot on them. However your anatomy as a whole is pretty weak, your proportions being completely off. The most obvious fault is that the heads are way too large, but there are other problems as well like angles of attachment of limbs, as well as the shape of muscles that just don't look right.
Unfortunately there's no quick fix for this, and you really just have to keep practicing and making improvements (like actually looking at what you're doing wrong and correcting it instead of just drawing mindlessly) and you'll get there eventually.
The other problem is the chicken scratch. I scratched like you for the longest time, and the moment I started using longer, flowing lines, I saw massive improvement in my work. Try drawing with a fineliner or some other kind of pen, and just focus on making one mark for one continuous line. Your work will look better and I promise you won't regret it.

>> No.3064532

>>3064521
Do you recommend studying from anatomy books, the only life drawing classes in my area are for hen parties. My only other option is sketching people at the gym three times a week, being in a cold country people are usually covered up, even in summer.
Your right the chicken scratch needs to get btfo.
In regards to the proportions those guys are only five feet tall and very skinny so that probably exaggerates my already existing proportion problems. Thanks very much for that helpful critique.

>> No.3064616

>>3064532
Happy to help.
In my experience, the best solution would be a combination of both life and anatomy. Sketching people at the gym sounds like a great idea, and would essentially force you to work faster and make more meaningful and economic marks. In regards to life drawing, don't feel that you have to only draw naked people; most of the figures you'll be depicting will be clothed anyway, and all the important information will be conveyed even under clothing. Ultimately, do some reading and copying from established books, (the Loomis meme really helps) and then try to incorporate what you learn in those books into your life drawings, be they clothed or not.
Hope I helped.

its garbage, you need to draw boxes in perspective and train your line quality. You're trying to run when you cant stand up.
