If you want a Discord, IRC channel or even a fucking Skype group related to a particular subject, you need to kill any offtopic talk immediately and ban repeat offenders, otherwise it will turn into reddit tier meme infested shithole with no actual on topic posting and the most valuable contributors leaving the community. Been there, done that.

From my 10 years experience in IRC, Skype & discord channels this can only go in 2 ways:

Person (A) is given critique from person's (B) which then person (C), (D), and (F) repeats what (B) said just to not feel left out in the hugbox conversation.

Person (A) now feels ganged up on. Typically this is because this person is not truly a resident from 4chan or a place where truth stings. Person (B), now feeling superior in some strange way, begins to exert their manly spirit on person (A).

Person (A) continues to bitch as persons E thru S make a war about it for 30 minutes.

Person (A) finally says "thanks" as person (B) combs back their manly hair feeling accomplished for the day (rather than drawing) after typing what appears to be a 5000 word argument about why Person (A) was wrong.

And God seen this (moderator). God promotes person (B) to pet moderator.

Persons D through Z wake up and realize person B all along does not draw (or hardly does) and asks for their blog. Person B, with the power, is now smug and sips coffee from the mug of God himself as they post epic memes for all to enjoy. The quality of discord/IRC/CHAT degrades into Person Bs territory as the true Moderator is never home or is doing something else to care less about what the new nanny is doing.

And thus a grand rule has been born. Be the first to be helpful in the eyes of the new community and be promoted quickly.

This won't happen in my house. A shred of faggotry detected will be kicked. A man who alerts that I kicked their boyfriend will have their posts removed and kicked so fast out of my kingdom they'd think they were living in Alice's wonderland.

The second scenario almost always what can be improved. Hugbox squad use this as opportunity to move conversation more. Quite frankly I believe critique by paintover is superior only when it's not obvious. Therefore critique in IRC communities shouldn't be a focus in a real time community. Erase all opportunities for hugboxes.
