How good are Jeff Watts' online classes? Are they worth the money?

Heard that the most expensive option with Watts isn't really worth it. Also for $200/month more you get half the time you could spend with your instructor and consequently they (in this more expensive case Jeff, who on top of it all doesn't focus on teaching per se, but also managing bussiness and other stuff) know you less.

Idk, I think for online classes I'd pay less.

does anyone know what it would cost to be a student in his personally school? what are the classes like? how many days a week do you draw? is it like a normal school?

To be fair in this case she can get away with it. Jeff Watts talks 90% of the time and 10% actual instruction so she can do something similar.

So is she just copying a photo or is it a life drawing of a model? Does this course not include anything from imagination?
this type of 'human camera' drawing is literally just patience and measuring. learning how to rotate 3d objects in your mind and draw anything you want is the only lessons worth paying for. those skills are actually employable too - although if someone is shuffling that much money for art lessons they probably already have a good job

she bought all those plastic casts you'd see in a classroom and is copying from those as well as photos
>Does this course not include anything from imagination?
well nothing is preventing anyone from doing so

As someone who actually went to the brick and mortor and also did the online classes i will say they are decent, you might even get more information from them.

I will say there is nothing that's going to beat actually being there though. it's an amazing place and rich enviornment for artist to grow.

I am in the process of saving money to study at an atelier for a few years and Watts Atelier is first on my list. While the pricing for the classes seems very fair and doable for me I have no idea how much rent and internet costs there. Do you have a rough estimate what the lowest rents are for just a shitty 1 room place to study? I live in Europe so I have absolutely zero idea how much I need to account for living costs.

Isn't Watts in LA? Just search the rates of LA places. It might be expensive since it's the city and all though.

No, the address is: 171 Calle Magdalena # 103, Encinitas, CA 92024, USA.

I would appreciate if anyone could give me a rough estimate for the shittiest apartment/room within reach or any useful links.

It's in Encinitas, a beach town. You're literally 10 minutes from the beach near Watts. Beach areas can be pricey to live at in California.

Unfortunately Watts is really shitty about helping students find temp housing. They might be better about it now since one of the younger students was murdered by his psycho room mate a couple years ago.

When I was thinking of going to Stephen Silver's drawing academy a couple years ago I was legit thinking of buying a cargo van, furnishing it and bouncing between Walmart locations, because even a $10,000 van would be less expensive than living in a 130 square foot studio apartment for a couple weekends-but it never materialized because I'm a failure. I would still recommend it to anybody though. A van with a mattress, a solar array and a drawing desk sounds like the life, gnomesaiyan?

A lot of people go to Essex Heights because you can just walk across the street to the school in 10 minutes. Also a small grocery store conveniently by. Unfortunately Watts doesn't have a public forum so students can look for room mates which would seem ideal? But they probably figure students will find a way if they really want to come to the school.

But if you do ever get a chance to go. Take classes with Jeff's dad. One of the best teachers there and you don't get the narcissistic rambling you get from Jeff.

Thanks, I will definitely take at least one of his dad's classes, but I have to admit I really like Jeff's ramblings, probably the main reason I haven't quit trying.

The life circumstances are perfect for me right now and I can afford to take 7 classes per term for 3 years, but I struggle to find a place to live for like 500-600€ a month. If I can't find an affordable place I will have to go to the Russian Art Acadmy in Florence, at least that's one of the few other schools who don't do sight-size all the time.
