You need to have a decent grasp of observational drawing first, as well as being able to draw simple 3D forms like cubes and spheres in perspective (first part of drawabox).

if you need proof that knowing basic construction and proportions (which is what Loomis teaches...) is useful then I'm not sure what to tell you.

im not denying construction is fundamental but loomis is not the only one teaching it. since you said you recently re-read his books i would like to see your work before and after to see what particular effect it had in your art.
