I appreciate the kind-of-contribution but just to clarify, this thread is supposed to be for constructing a figure based off an image, but drawing the pose from a different point of view, so trying to tilt the model around in your head, and not for posting figures from different angles and straight up drawing those.

Do you guys have any tips or good excercises for drawing a foreshortened body?

Because I'm having quite a lot of problems with drawing anything other than a simple 360 turnaround.

>> No.2856084

>>2855887
Start by learning how to draw a foreshortened body from direct reference, then try to recreate a foreshortened pose from indirect reference.

>> No.2856114

2856114

>>2855887
What comes together when attempting to draw a foreshortened figure are principles of depth/perspective and knowledge of the human form.
Pic related, a foreshortened form, as the term suggests, will never be as long as in straight on view.
If you think of the human body as made up of thin plates stacked onto each other, as a 3d printer would, and you tilt the figure in space, these plates would overlap each other.
Some may be hidden or only peek out a bit.
When you know about the volume or form of the body and about how forms diminish in size when they recede into space, you can estimate how the plates or forms would overlap.
When drawing a foreshortened figure, there is a temptation to draw parts that wouldn't be visible from the intended view, because the actual two-dimensional shape does not correspond with what we are familiar with as the human form, which is an image gathered mostly from straight-on views.
So you have to submit to drawing shapes that may seem abstract at first.
Through practice like observing and drawing from life (simplify the forms, eg. arm=cylinder) you can be able to recognize reoccurring shapes and get a feel for what looks right, even from unusual angles.

tl;dr: learn about perspective principles and anatomy, draw from life

>>2856114
What I wrote about plates might be confusing, I just mean cross sections of the body, but for the sake of simplicity, the body should be thought to consist of basic forms, so circles (ellipses in perspective) for pic related are fine ofc. Hell, this is basically what sycra's "coil technique" is based upon, building form by stacking these circles as they recede or come forward. Although he is spiraling around the form in a continous line, rather than drawing seperate cross sections.

I find it helpful to draw the directional lines of the limbs first, so a stick figure if you will. keeps it simple and depending on how foreshortened a limb is, you just draw a shorter line. and circles or dots for the joints or other landmarks, then just connect them. so it's a simple skeleton first, that shows the orientation and place in space, afterwards volume is built with drawing tubes or boxes around, the rest is refinement based on reference or experience. oh, and at the very beginning it can help to draw a sort of bounding box, that encloses the whole figure and informs you of it's orientation in space, refer to it for reference at any time and add perspective lines to your drawing if needed.
