Make drawing from imagination you main thing. Do pieces that take from 5 hours to 20 hours to even 40 hours. It's about refining what you have instead of copying mindlessly. You have to think and to do very long imaginative works, it really gets your gears moving.

Don't listen to that retard. Doing long pieces is probably what you DON'T want to do when it comes to draw from imagination. Drawing from imagination comes down to breaking things down into simple shapes and sketching them. For example, it's much easier to internalize a figure that's taken 15-20 minutes to draw that's made up of simple forms than a 3 hour figure with unnecessary detail and nuances.

Do both? Short focused studies are really good. but you don't want to end up unable to make a full piece. My plan when work dies down here in a few weeks is to have shorter sessions of focused studies (1-2 hours) with the occasional longer piece of something more fun.

20 to 40 hours seems a bit much though.

was wondering tho, i know you can drop a perpendicular line from the center of the clavicals to a flat surface level with gravity to find the usual center of gravity in a figure but since she's resting the mallet on her shoulder and it's p big wouldn't that shift the center of her weight more towards where the mallet contacts? it feels like, especially after i fix the foot that her center of gravity might then be a bit too far forward, tho i could fix this with some slight rotation but i wanna know whether or not i'd need that before i start inking

that ear could be a bit higher and your eyes a looking flat.
But before that consider friend your lines.
Cartoonists who draw in lines most of their lives complain that they 'think in lines".
That when they illustrate something they can't help but to dry to do so by throwing down information only as lines.
To help break that and to free themselves a little drawing not in lines but in shapes is a good exercise.
Might help you to get over the idea that 'form can only be shown in lines' that may perhaps you have?

>> No.2832963

This:

>both

Focus 80% of your energy on 30 min works where you work on breaking stuff into simple forms. 20% on long (20-30 hour) works where you work on exacting proportion and thinking about how small, textural stuff is actually tiny simple forms and how to express that.

Exercise: draw something from life, direct observation. Next day, draw it from memory.

"Imagination" relies largely on having a visual library to pull from. The more you've memorized breaking stuff into simple forms and how to get that to read on paper, the more you can cross reference and combine features into things you wanna draw. It's like photobashing from your head.

"I wanna draw an sleek-future-industrial-beast spaceship. Good thing I drew that harley, the lava lamp and those dinosaur toys."

Once you've done the exercise enough, you'll be able to commit stuff to your library without drawing it, like KJG does, but it will take practice to strengthen the "memory muscle".

Back in late 2014 through 2015, I used to exercise quite a lot. I got my fundies from Loomis' figure drawing and fun with pencil, but realism really wasn't my thing. It was excruciating to learn, it wasn't enjoyable at all, so I strayed away quickly and decided to continue alone with my simplified style and imperfected understanding of the fundies. I still couldn't get myself to be satisfied of my own drawing. 2016 was a year long hiatus, I gave up drawing.

Now, going back, it feels like I've forgotten so much of what I used to know I guess.

See how it's clearly a face but yet no lines. Just shapes and blobs of color.
Grabbing a vivid, squinting at a image of a face to help reduce it to it's key areas of shadow and going at a paper is a great way to practice thinking about form and shape while not getting caught up in detail.

If you draw purely from memory then you run the risk of cementing symbols.
The problem there being that when you go to draw an eye you're running through the motions of lines that you know will look like an eye, but lacks the understanding of an eye.
So when you go to draw an eye at a different angle or go to cast light on the eye you may not know how how.

>I got my fundies
Bad news, friend. You don't have your fundies. I can tell because the mouth looks like flat lines drawn on a surface anc the eyes aern't even in the same plane. Does learning fundies suck? Yes. It takes years. But there's no other way.

Jimi poster is right, try working with value /shadow shapes, no lines.

>So like sticking different shapes in 3D modelling

No, that's construction a'la scott robertson. That's a little above ur head (though it's not a bad idea to to a perspective setup and try 3d modeling on paper at some point, even if you fail)

Jimi poster means looking for the 2d shapes that make up shadow and draw by 'thinking' in terms of those. See pic related, he's not using shading, and although he uses lines, it's just to find the shadow shapes. Obviously he's going for realism, but finding shadow shapes is a common stage for stylization too. It's essential for showing form.

looking for/thinking in shapes is easier if you use a brush or piece of charcoal on it's side, which forces you to not use lines.

Yeah, it definitely looks better. I think it was probably because of how the line flowed from her neck to her head. The transition was too smooth, it looked like an elite covenant's head. mouth doesn't look impossible, but isn't exactly aligned with centerline. bottom lip should be "pointed" a bit more to her right.

eyes look fine, if a bit far apart.

her right jaw corner is a lot more square than her left, resulting in a rounder face on the left than the right. if you cover up the left side and then cover up the right side, it looks like two different people.

nose bridge as shown by rendering is great, but doesn't line up with the lined nostril. now that i think about it, the face above the nostril looks angled but the face below the nostril looks like it's head-on.

i like the coloring though.

Draw with a color with the brightness of medium gray(halfway between black and white) and draw lightly like you'd do on paper for construction and only start applying pressure when you feel like tightening up the sketch. If forgot to sketch in a different color than the color that you're doing your lineart on, then you can always lock the transparent pixels and color the sketch layer to a diff color. I used a Note 4 with Sketchbook pro for that one and an iPad pro with Procreate for pic related, used the pencil brush in the former and the mechanical pencil setting in the latter, you have to be patient building up values with just hatching takes time, practicing with a true mechanical pencil or a Bic can give you the sensitivity to better evaluate your lines in the digital medium

I assume your doing a political piece? If so, you should focus a little less on getting a likeness, and a bit more on forming a caricature of him.

I really want to keep it a bit realistic and not stray too much into the manga style I'm prone to as you can see on the statue, this is the linework and then I'm gonna render it so it won't be needed, maybe I can pump the cariture up there, like making him orange and then I will do the eyebrows.

I started drawing on Nov 2012. As for drawing humans just do a lot of figure drawing you should have a well enough grasp of perspective (2 points at least) though. I also go back rather frequently to Anatomy for Sculptors, my hatching fwiw got considerable better after using Bic pens, mechanical pencil and reading the Alphonso Dunn book.

However an anon above said my stuff is stiff AF so take what I said with a huge grain of salt

Your proportions are off. Her anatomy is concerning in some areas. I made this redline to help you better understand what I'm seeing. This is the first redline I've ever made for someone, so feel free to call me out on my bullshit. If you think my own proportions are off, please say so. I know having your own style might inevitably alter proportions on the human body, which is fine. If that's what you were aiming for, I understand. If not, I would recommend studying human anatomy more and really try to memorize the muscular and skeletal systems.

I think your girl is cute! Study the human body some more so you can draw her even cuter! Give her the body she deserves.

Guys, my lines from my tablet monitor seems to be jittering a tiny bit in Clip Studio Paint. I've been using Paint Tool Sai for a temporary replacement for sketching and lineart, because even with 0 in the stabilization I can draw smooth lines both going fast and going slow (also almost no lag is present). I have to usually put the stabilization on most of the brushes to the max to get the same quality I can get on paper and on Sai. Any advice for making my Clip Studio great again?
