While I think it's okay to destroy the pieces that softly whisper "please kill me" while you sleep, I also believe it's good to save a bunch for future reference on how bad we were.

Like Zandra Rhodes (famous fashion pattern/graphic artist) says, "if you make a mistake you have to live with it". She's one of my art inspos because besides her graphic work, she forces herself to draw at least one decent pic a day and she has kept them all for over 30 years.

For inspo and pic related, a particular piece she made, I love the palette and shapes. She's a quirky old lady but her patterns are drawn by hand and in one big piece (they're as big as a dining table before sewing).

For a famous example, the Ikkitousen artist blatantly traced stuff from Tenjou Tenge (which is a manga with the same themes, so the readers overlaps a lot) among other sources. Said manga has now been adapted into multiple anime series, has an endless amount of figurine made every year, gets cosplayed to no end etc.. So much for "tracing ends your career".
The lesson you should have learned is: if you trace, don't be a pussy and do it with extreme impunity.

Don't directly jump into Loomis, start with keys to drawing. A basilar thing when drawing from reference photos is measuring and constructing.

You kind of need to know what you're doing before you do it with pen, so I'd hold off on that for a while. You're having some basic problems with edges and values that really need to be solved if you don't want your stuff to look like basic beginner work. Just try to make an effort to do some real studies, maybe avoid human subjects for a bit, work through keys to drawing by Bert Dodson, and just do a ton of still life value studies. Work in masses of tone and avoid hard lines around the edges of things unless those actually exist in the subject. Keep lines to very light measurements for your lay-in. Be really patient with your lay-in to make sure you're drawing things exactly as they are, and that you're not cutting corners in favour of a symbol that kind of looks like what you're drawing but isn't really the real shape. If you need to spend hours and hours on something to get it right, put the time in. A lot of those 4-12+ hour efforts I made earlier on were the ones where the real progress was made, it's all attention to detail and patience. Just try that for a few months and I think you'll really start to 'get' some fundamental things that you're missing.

You don't want to carry on the way you've been going because you'll be spinning your wheels. Just keep your enthusiasm up and buckle down.

In the earlier videos couple years ago you can tell it's a female voice that was manually lowered in Audacity. It wasn't a natural male voice. Doxy probably went on HRT because the voice changed and he sounds better now, and it doesn't take too long for testosterone to kick in (going from male to female is much harder).

Not that it makes him less of an artist, but your friend wasn't completely off when he said his favorite female artist was doxy.
