Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

→ →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I used to draw a ton when I was younger but unfortunately I got depression when I was in my early teenage years and I just stopped doing it. I've recently been trying to get back into it, and luckily I still remember some about basic proportion, but I'm still a beginner like everyone else.
I've been trying to jump right into digital painting, but I always feel like whenever I draw like that it just looks terrible. I think that it's the coloring and understanding of shading with color mostly, because I never really did any of that before. If anyone could critique aside from my suspicion or link some good color tutorials (not videos, I'm on a data cap,) I'd appreciate it.

For fuck's sake you could've included everything in a single post.

- Both heads look rotated/biased counter-clockwise. The edge of the paper is visible and i don't think its due to how you took the picture. Must be due to the underlying construction lines you used...

-Construction lines: You look like your trying to do a hybrid of drawing from the reference and from your head (with the help of the wire frames). Pick one. Otherwise your just bullshitting yourself into thinking you captured the form. Your proportions end up being off and there's some symbol drawing. Practice proportions first, they're off. Don't contour, use basic forms. I haven't read Huston, so I'm not sure what you wanted to do here, but it's neither gesture nor a proper figure drawing. I'd suggest to start with quick studies of the relationship between the 8 core body parts (head, ribcage, pelvis, spine and the 4 limbs). Draw some simplified mannequins with focus on proportions. Don't overthink it. A few pages of one to two minute studies should give you a decent feel of the relation between those parts.

I use Reilly's as well because Loomis' method never worked that well for me. Just keep practicing and try drawing a complete head with it. If you're experienced enough, applying Reilly doesn't necessarily mean you need to draw that entire diagram every single time, with experience just a few bits of it is enough.

Bear in mind that, for deliberate practice where you really think hard as you are drawing, you likely won't be able to do more than 4-5 hours in a day. You definitely can do art for more hours a day, but more of it will just be going through the motions. Even world-class athletes and musicians are limited by their concentration, not necessarily their time, so just keep this in mind. If you are practicing hard, and constantly keeping your mind in the game, then 4-5 hours is probably as good as it gets. That said, there's plenty of things you'll eventually get to that take time, but not necessarily a lot of brain power. With those, you can take it above 4-5 hours.

The spooky atmosphere is cool, but the perspective doesn't make sense and the sketch itself is quite unreadable. It would probably benefit you to try rendering a bunch of simpler objects, like cubes and vases and such, before attempting to render something so complex - I certainly wouldn't feel confident in doing something like that so maybe I'm the wrong person to give advice, but see the pic I attached for what strikes me as the biggest issues with this one. A good way to find your own mistakes is to overlay your drawing and the original. If that still doesn't work, go ahead and trace key points of the image and then overlay the trace to your drawing. Then the mistakes should stand out.

I went ahead and first marked a few key things about the ref. The shadow on her face was a bit confusing at first. I did a rough trace myself so I could compare and see more clearly. I had noticed a few things but not everything that was wrong until I overlayed everything.

People are pointing out the eyes a lot, which are definitely off, but you at least got the spacing correct. The biggest problem is how the features are pulled to the left, and to compensate you misaligned the neck.
Also I'm pretty sure the girl in your photo is wearing a wig, this reference really isn't the best- there's a lot of information in it that is ambiguous.

>> No.2656759

When I'm gesture drawing, I spend more time looking at the photo and drawing without looking because I feel rushed. This seems counter-productive and my drawings look like complete shit. Am I doing it wrong? Should I give myself more time to correctly draw without feeling rushed?

When I was going to an art school, a common exercise we did was drawing a subject without looking at the paper. I'm not sure if this was the same thing or not.

Pic related. It's not a matter of WHO you have to follow, it's whoever clicks with you better.

When I looked at the figure too much I started focusing on the contour. Glance at the subject, memorize a rhythm of their body and draw it. At least that's what helped me break free from the contour shit. Also you reallyt shouldn't be rushed if you're doing it correctly, bump up your time to 30 seconds then whittle yourself down over time.

This is how learning works: you study something (from a class, a book, a tutorial, or observation), you apply it yourself (you draw), you review it (or someone else does it for you), and from the critique you modify your earlier understanding of the technique or principle, or you modify how you approach it, and then you go back to studying more. Learning a new or better way of doing it also falls into this scheme.

You will always (sooner or later) come back to relearning the same thing over and over, picking up something you missed the last time, or seeing it in a completely new way, or just refreshing it. The important thing is not to get discouraged by this: the wheel turns in a circle, but you're still moving forward.

Do people actually look at paintings like this? I don't "get" the idea of leading the eye. When I look at a painting my eyes don't robotically follow lines around the picture, I usually just look immediately at the face or brightest spot and then wherever else. Even with all these big red arrows I don't follow them, and I've never felt like "these lines are leading my eye off the page"; the borders of a picture prevent that. What am I missing here?
