So I can really afford one of these things.

What is the pros and cons of using New Masters Academy and Concept's Level Up Course?

Do they both offer assignments and critiques? If any of you have improved using either of them would you mind showing me your improvements?

If I had to say what kind of art I want to go into, I would be more illustrations and character designs. Not so much concept art like Feng but just kinda comic book ish. I would love to do comic covers.

(pic unrelated, i just like D. Cooke and try to ape his style)

new masters doesn't have assignments its just a great collection of tutorials from some great artists.
Its also the cheapest. I dont know Level up.

They have lots of hands on critiquing with the community and the teachers, and such which is a big plus for me,

but on the other hand.. alot of people here are into new masters

Nice gestures, do you have any of your art before you did some new masters and some current ones?

I would go with New Masters only because they haven't had the site and management issues CA has had the last few years.

Plus they have great info from artists like Vilppu, Steve Huston, Danny Galieote, Sheldon Borenstein etc.

so the choice is between
glen vilppu: the guy who taught disney/pixar animators
steve huston: the guy who taught mullins

or

jason manley: the conartist who got kicked out of his last school for barely showing up and being an unprofessional asshole when he did. maybe he'll send you sexy emails if you pay extra.

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/285530-Jason-Manley-art-and-the-Level-Up!-workshop

you're right. this is difficult

also; what ended up happening with that lawsuit? wasn't manley supposed to lose CA?

Not that anon, the gesture demos are all free and on Youtube. They're the only NMA material I've seen but they're super helpful.
My gestures haven't gotten much better but I am enjoying them a heck of a lot more. Vilppu and Steve Huston ones are amazing.

Which is a concept artified version of Rapid Viz.
Drawabox is nice for poorfags who don't have money but still want their assignments to be critiqued, though. Helped me quite a bit.

Is it possible to get rapid viz or dynamic sketching entirely online?

The drawabox format is pretty much what I need but a more comprehensive course would also be great.

Just got Rapid Viz through cgp and have only skimmed through it. I'm curious to see how it relates to Dynamic Sketching, since I'm currently taking it at CGMA.

Which by the way was originally a course at Art Center held by Norman Schureman (pic related, one of his drawings that look very much like Peter Han's stuff from the course).

Norman got shot in 2010, and Peter took over teaching Dynamic Sketching since he as well had studied it under Schureman.

How are NMA towards digital artists? Do they offer any good digital painting/art courses with modern techniques?

>> No.2132879

>>2132876
It's all up to you when it comes to mediums man. Unless you're watching very specific tutorials on the medium, you need to be able to interpret traditional techniques into digital within reason.
Eg, drawing with the arm isn't always possible with digital depending on tablet size but you can still achieve similar results with your wrist.

>> No.2132893

>>2132879

Are there any videos I can watch (not just NMA) where they teach how to actually draw with the pencil?

Not the art techniques, but how to handle your arm/wrists so you don't get carpal tunnel, etc.

>> No.2132896

>>2132893
I can't think of any off the top of my head since I learned most of my traditional techniques with conte and moved over to pencil for any traditional stuff.

Only advice I can offer on the traditional level is to draw with the arm when doing lay-ins and such. I know that CGMA has a series called Dynamic Sketching with Peter Han which REALLY helps with traditional linework.

It's a taught course but the videos for it are CGPeers.

Dynamic Sketching is pen only, no pencils allowed. Proko has a nice video on youtube explaining what he uses, how he sharpens it, holds it and draws from the shoulder. He used to go to Jeff Watts atelier, so they teach the same thing there. I picked up their technique and can definitely recommend it.

>> No.2132950

>>2132946
There is literally nothing wrong with using a pencil for Han's course, as long as you forego the eraser and use a 90 degree grip like he does.

>> No.2132959

>>2132950
You see, this is exactly the problem when people just pirate the videos instead of taking the actual course. Because in the live Q&A sessions he elaborates a lot more on these things - I'll try to summarise a bit of what I can recall that is relevant this discussion:

1: The 90° thing is only for the first few exercises, and pretty much the only point of it is conserving the tip of the pen when doing shitloads of line exercises, as you should be doing. He said he does not care much about how you hold your pen, as long as you're comfortable with it.

2: Dynamic Sketching is based on drawing on brown paper, which will work a lot better with an ink pen than a pencil - you can go full black, while you will struggle getting a lot of contrast with a pencil. Also, since he teaches the use of highlights and frames done with a white gel pen, you learn to work with the full black/white contrast, while pencil only gives you meh-gray/white.

3: With a pencil, as with a ballpoint pen, you can use pen pressure to change your line weight. That way, many people scribble around a lot before putting down the actual line. With an ink pen, you can't do that - a line is a line, you can't slowly and carefully work your way towards it. You hit it once, and if you mess up you'll know it. And then you do it again, learning from your mistake. That way you will learn true line confidence and be less hesitant when drawing. That kind of practice is why he is so damn fast when drawing, and it seems like he still just hits everything spot on.

So as you see, there's more to the no-pencil thing than just not being able to erase.
