I feel like I have only two ways of working with pencils or sketching, I either over render or scribble, looking for a good middle to be at the same time expressive, presentable and quick.

Share your folder of pencil sketches inspiration!!!

Agreed, look at your OP pic... Frazetta was "scribbling" himself for that one. Or are you gonna tell me all those lines were carefully thought out and planned?

Keep at it anon.

is more scribbling, and isn't that appealing to me. At least in my opinion, there is some more care given to the picture. The figure is drawn fairly well, all the shapes are great, and very appealing. The only scribble is really for the hair. I think really the key is to know what you can get away with using scribbles in a sketch. Use care with your drawings, really. Know what you can scribble and leave messy. Draw well what needs to be drawn well.

I could see the uses of scribbling for people starting out, but more so for the case when you can't evaluate a mark until it's already placed on the page. Drawing lightly accomplishes that same goal, but better.

Scribbling on it's own shouldn't teach you anything about gesture and form. The connotations I associate with scribbling is messy and random, instead of careful and deliberate. Even a loose, quick drawing shouldn't be messy or random when drawn by a master.

That said, quick exploratory lines and marks can be helpful to capturing a gesture. As long as we aren't talking about haphazard, purposeless lines.

Images like these are so demotivating. And I'm not usually the type to get demotivated by others' artistic pursuits at all. But there's just something so spirit crushing about kids who already are or are going to be so much better than you at something almost entirely due to their circumstances (school rigor, upbringing, starting age, etc). Such melancholy in not being able to go back in time to be more like this.

Also, awesome shit in this thread.

He's right though that the markmaking is incredible in many of these images. How is that a faggot thing to say? It's not like he made up some term or is trying to sound pretentious. It's a fact.

Sorry, i forgot about this thread. (if youll even see this.)

He would use photos of himself/his wife quite often, and you can find these online pretty easily.
Not to discredit him, he was very skilled, but he couldn't make everything up perfectly.

Ill often have my girlfriend pose for me while im working, but usually just quick poses i dont need to photograph. I wouldnt be surprised.

Fair enough.

I see a lot of people talk shit about Frazetta, like for example how they think he claimed that he learned anatomy in one day which he never did, so that's why I wanted some proof for once.

>> No.2099944

>>2099556
He actually talks about that in this interview:

http://classic.tcj.com/interviews/frank-frazetta-interview/

Its an interesting read as well. But yeah, he's an embellisher, but i think he's got that right, and hes was still very skilled/talented (as shitty as the word talented is.)

Why is art so fucking hard? It's literally more difficult than math. I feel like I'm getting nowhere, no matter how hard I try. And looking at these amazing sketches magnifies that feeling.

You probably have another 60-80 years to git gud. It'll be okay, anon. You could probably learn to render like that in 2 weeks if you had someone to guide you and worked really hard at it.

It wouldn't be surprising if that photo was staged too, knowing North Korea's tendencies with visitors. It wouldn't be impossible, though.
