Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1922670

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

what >>1927584 said, the tibia never bends. its a bone. bones dont bend normally.

take a look at the halfway point, the greater trochanter's head. any human being can be split here and be exactly the same length on each part. your girl, however, has extremely long legs. even if we take away her high heels and measure at the ball of her foot the legs are still much too long.

the left leg is out of whack as well. if you were to turn her in 3d space you'd see she'd have different length legs. which is bad, unless you want her to have LLD. you could make the excuse that the rest of the leg (that you didn't draw) is behind her, but that would be dumb.

the two figures are out of perspective in relation to each other. the girl with the sword is extremely big or the other one is extremely small. just doesn't make any sense where the viewer is here.

other than that, looks attractive. try to draw hands and feet please?

It's obviously a too difficult shape for you.

Use more simple shape and a defined light source. Start with boxes and spheres.

The face and a head is difficult but can be simplified to be shaded more easily, think of low poly 3d version. You are not at this stage yet.

There's a real sense of expression here compared to your previous work, so that's definitely an improvement.

The face and head have the appearance of a photograph with a wide-angle lens. Not sure if that's intentional, but I think it detracts either way.

Composition is probably the weakest aspect. It's such an uncomfortably close crop, and I feel that expression warrants more narrative on your part. Give the viewer context.

Thanks.

I wanted to turn her head down and to her left and in an effort to convey that I probably made her upper right features a bit bigger than they should be. The composition is a complicated issue since I need to extend the background for some lyrics I will put when it's finished.

>>1928292

Although when I block out her right eye socket it's possible that resizing and repositioning that could fix most of the problems.

The back of the cranium looks underdeveloped either way. Remember that the thickness of the hair in the front is extrapolated to the back of the hair, making the width of the back of the head too narrow (and contributing to that 'wide-angle' distortion).

I learned lots about rendering with the Maughan's book: The Artist's Complete Guide to Drawing the Head. The book isn't about digital painting but all its theory applies.

I'm afraid I didn't follow any particular resource about digital painting except for a Sycra's tutorial on Pencil Kings it's the one with the still life reference. This is my version: http://firez-da.deviantart.com/art/Still-Life-443026538 . However I feel that that tutorial was more about learning to use photoshop than rendering.

I guess I just try to work on my stuff until they "ring true/appealing" to me, always trying to apply what I have learned on still lifes/photo studies.

not that anon but your forms have no sense of volume. those legs could be tubes or flat socks. You need to push it so we know that there is flesh, bone, muscle there etc.

>> No.1929396

>>1929266
Ooh right, I was thinking about just some simple cell shading since that's what I automatically think of next when there are basic colors present already. But if shading isn't common in 2D sprites, then yeah, you don't need to change that.
About the muted colors, the background has warm colors and the sprites are bright and look saturated in comparison, it's a good contrast so the player can easily keep track of things but the difference can be lowered just a little bit.
Again, it looks very solid and nice so far. The details make it look like a real screenshot

I think the hair only looks off because his head isn't tall enough. That's what I'm seeing at least. Needs more brain room. As far as the eyes go the close one looks smaller/squintier than the farther away one. Which is probably what you're having a problem with.

try b&w first to learn about values (core, mid. reflected). next you get into flat colors through color theory (color affected by light intensity and temperature, ambient occlusion, etc). if you are still alive, use 3 colors and 3 values per color and the b&w value scale as a guide. in the mid time study other artist like the one you posted and realise that in the left there is a digital light artifact and the clothes have a shiny effect caused by a lighter tone in between 2 tones

>> No.1930016

>>1929994
That is the basic idea but it has nothing to do with this drawing, the values and colors are extremely basic, he has a bit of a cast shadow going and then
some very smooth gradient with a hint of reflected light, what makes it good is the drawing not the color, if the drawing was bad the color would seem pretty
basic as well.

I've been drawing for 3 years as well, didn't really start improving until a few months ago.

Seemed my problem was that I relied too much on reference for drawing.
Now I usually start from imagination, and then use reference afterwards if needed.
This way I force myself to think 3 dimensionally, since I'll never be able to find a reference that perfectly fits the current image I've made, where as before, where I started from reference, I would just end up copying the reference no matter what.

I'm not really feeling the emotion in this particular illustration you've shown us.

Have you read the sticky? You should really look into the book series by Andrea Loomis. Gary Vilppu is also a serious resource to consider.

You should try heightening the contrast and depth of the image with a wider array of colors. I think you'd benefit to also do some research into color theory. Chun Lin Park is a great reference.

I also feel that other good references to improve your work exponentially would be to look at Illustrator's work(he's a great artist that frequents this site often on many occasions and can often be found on many occasions posting exemplary work). I'm also a major fan of works by Tom Provolone. He mostly does comics, but I think his works reveal just how far one can flesh out an entire in-depth concept with a simple sketch.

I gotta say though, you have a good start. I don't think there are many artists here that can produce this same kind of work with as much originality as you have demonstrated.
Is this a character for a story you've created?
Personally I'd be interested to see where you take it.

Btw,

Furry and anthropic are the same thing; Are you wanting to avoid the negative associations with furry art?

Look at Hollyann, Magnus, Razers, and Neophyte. They are all relatively good 'furry' artists who have stayed away from the porn aspect of it.

Style wise? Check image boards. There's two relatively good 'anime' inspired artists I can think of who are western, unfortunately, they both draw a LOT of porn. (Yiff, yuck. That's what you want to stay away from.)

Just... like, don't draw porn man.

Furry = cartoon inspired
Kemono = anime inspired
so just find out what makes each of these distinct and you can go about applying it.
