Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"Remember that most of the action in your figures must come from you as you feel it rather than from a model. A vital expression is more important here than accuracy."

Previous Thread: >>1918030

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

It's one thing to use real life reference, as this requires some skill to translate into art.
But when you're directly copying someone else's art, you need to point out that it's copied or referenced, as you're quite literally taking credit for someone else's work.
If he doesn't point this out, he's also misleading the people who are supposed to critique him, as there's a world of difference between criticizing copied art and original art.

It's hard for me to say this very well, since I'm not you and I can't speak for you.

I've looked at the critiques directed at you in this thread, and they seem like a disservice to you since most of them don't really offer anything helpful.

I know the remarks about the face are particularly irritating to me since I don't think anyone should be trying to tell you what's appealing and what's not unless what you're producing is fundamentally repulsive.

If you like something in particular, then I think you should try to find a better way to incorporate it before trying to just wholesale change or otherwise dismantle it because someone doesn't like it.

If you like something about it, chances are someone else'll like it too.
And so will more.

I guess I'm not offering breakthrough advice here or anything, but if you're feeling you lost something I'd blame it on making concessions to answer problems that were either not there or not really well explained.

I guess in particular, again, with the face, as noted by >>1925667, there is something structurally amiss.

Now, I'm sorry that I can't help but sound hypocritical here, but this is somewhere where you really haven't been helped. Yes, the face looked like it was jutting, but really? That head structure? Is the hair seriously piled up like that? To me it looks like the face itself is just too low. Most of her head is being dominated by her hair, and it just looks strange.

I'm sorry for being so wishy-washy; this is a wishy-washy piece of advice from a wishy-washy person. I guess I'm just trying to say that the advice is flawed because some of the people here aren't seeing the underlying problems. I saw another comment that just said to "fix the neck."
So the fuck what? What is so fucking wrong with the neck?
To me, it looks like it's too far to the left.
At the same time, I'd say it's only that way because the curvature of the neck isn't there. It comes straight down and doesn't follow her spine at all.

I guess all's I'm getting at is that I'm not really seeing anyone REALLY telling you anything all that helpful. I can't really speak(even though I already have) as if I'm different or special because I didn't say a word beforehand--I don't really care to do more than lurk here.

I just hate to see someone trying hard, and for the people around that person to offer shitty half-baked attempts at criticism.

If you're going to accept someone's critique, just make sure they've taken the time to analyze your piece and can tell you in detail what's wrong with your work. If they can't take the time to evaluate your work, why in the fuck would you let them tell you what's right or wrong with it?

Please have some integrity to your own tastes, and have the intellect to determine what's bullshit and what's not. By all means--let people tell you what's weird to them. Something like "the face is creepy" though is a matter of taste, and that kind of critique can fuck off. However, something you can see for yourself like "the neck is odd" or "the face is off" tells you can go ahead and inspect those areas. That being said, I don't see what's so hard about telling you the face is either too low/hair is too high, or that her neck doesn't connect to the spine properly.

Yea, I recently saw a deal for them at staples that was like $24 for the 72 pack, but it expired. I got mine off ebay. If you ebay them, your target price should be $2 each. I got mine for < $3 each, but I overpaid for ebay standards.

Water colors look hard to control and potentially messy. I like the markers because they are easy to clean up, organize, and they are discrete (not continuous). I can rapidly switch colors, and the drawing dries fast. The markers tend to match my personality more... If that makes any sense.

There is a bit of a learning curve, but I assume that is true for all media. I'm still pretty novice with them, and I'm always looking for tips and tricks.

Yeah, I just bought refills from dick blicks. They had the best price, and shipping is free over $50 - it was cheaper than in store and the selection is better online. yeah saw your line work, it's maybe a bit too loose. maybe you should use one or two strong lines for the body, but you absolutely make a line work for your face or else it'll be all mushed out and modified as you apply value and stuff. lines will carve the face in. you can then lower the opacity of the lines to your liking afterwards.

You can do whatever you feel; personally I think /ic/ seldom offers even a lick of advice that you couldn't have found on another forum or otherwise on your own.

I hope your own drive to improve and your own eye for design ultimately decides what you create.

I can't think of any specific names, because I've heard it so much. I also doubt I need to tell you this, but I will anyway because like I said, I'm partially writing out of my own frustration because I'm a little fockin' fyaggot.

Art should be as comprehensive as you make it for yourself. I won't say that it has to come naturally to you, but I will say that it should be enjoyable through-and-through.

If you're not having fun with art, why in the fuck would you keep making it?

It'd be painful to watch anyone unwillingly create art, and it'd be even more painful to watch someone unwillingly create something they hate. There's no love in it, and there's no fucking point in it.

If art's your passion, or even just something you do because you like it, don't let some dreck ruin it for you and turn it into a chore.

That applies to me too; fuck me, I'm sorry for writing this. I'm such a fucking angry little faggot right now and I can't help myself.

what most people ignore is how much the rib cage and pelvis actually impact the silhouette, here's a quick fix showing you "normal' proportions and yours. see how long your body is ?

waist level is 2 heads down, while the rib cage should be around one and a half

proportions are really not hard to learn, even if it's stylisation, you should apply them and it will immediatly look better, even if it's not perfect. good luck anon.

Tits are still a bit too low.
Don't shade with black, it's particularly bad on the neck. You're on the right track with the orange hue on the cleavage.
You can also lighten the far part of the face and check the eye size. Far eye is way smaller.
