What constitutes a great portfolio for someone who wants to be both a concept artist and an illustrator?

I am always drawing warriors and women but I feel that would make for a poor portfolio. Does anyone have experience with this or some helpful links?

Some kind anon shared a list of hiring sites and I happen to find myself in need of professional internet freelancing jobs but I don't know what to showcase and how to present my work.

Storytelling will be the most important aspect of your portfolio. Now, the stories you chose to illustrate will define who you want to see your work and what you want them to take away from it. Storytelling is paramount here.

Also attach a blog showing your creative process. Or post your creative process on a social network. Editors are interested in how you solved problems and how you generally think with your work. This peak behind the curtains helps them gage if you have integrity they can invest in and if you'll be a cultural fit. So put yourself out there and let them see how you do what you do.

Craig Mullins suggests to target your portfolio precisely for the client you're presenting it to.
