My question is relating to measuring and construction in general. Are there more youtube videos like the one that gets passed around here all the time. Similar in helpfulness and eye opening?

Are there any other useful tools or resources that can help me to measure more accurately. Or am I stuck as a caveman artist using a straight edge?

I had similar issues and it got me frustrated as shit but it goes back to your very basics when building a skill set. You gotta develop better visual acuity, if you can draw what's in front of your eyes accurately you can draw what's in your mind's eye accurately. Not sure if you do or not but start a life drawing regimen, take the time to really observe your subjects and take note of the distances and correlations of everything and eventually with time you can better judge distances and angles.

tl;dr draw from life

Guys, I can draw well digitally (not polished shit), but when I try to draw on paper it's like I don't know how to draw, the art totally sucks, why this keep happening?
I've been drawing for like 4 years, before that I never "did" something on paper because I've been always using my tablet.
How can I get off that cicle and transfer my knowledge to paper?
Thanks.

>> No.1708782

>>1708769
Just stop drawing digitally for a few days (or until you get comfortable) and start drawing traditionally. You're not losing your skills or anything, you're just not used to the eye/hand coordination or whatever.

Also, might just be me personally but you could be pretty picky with your paper. I found myself hating to draw on smoother paper than with rough. For some reason my brain likes to turn off if I'm not drawing on a paper texture I like.

i don't honest to god understand the point of studying loomis, in his book "Figure Drawing for all its Worth" i see him talk about proportions and all that jazz, but then he talks about the model meant to simplify the figure, which i know there is no absolute method behind simplifying the human body.
It seems what he teaches is either basic stuff like proportions or stuff that can be learned from observational drawings, like muscles and bones. So what exactly is so good about loomis that i am missing?

he's very solid. if you follow loomis religiously you'll be able to draw proportionate figures in perspective, in scenes. it might not be the most intuitive way to learn but it's everything you need to know. and if you read the actual words your figures won't even be stiff, and you'll follow his recommendation to draw from life and look at other sources of info. and you'll know how to get a job in the 50s illustration industry.

Gesture is most essential, and it will be the very first step of a finished figure drawing. Get gesture down, then comes anatomy and the rendering of forms. depends where you're struggling. Do you not know the 4 edges? Are you having difficulty rendering edges? Is it a software issue? Is it a traditional material issue?

I don't know of any particular video but Richard Shmit? Shmid's book called Alla Prima has a nice chunk about edges.

Personally I had a little difficulty with all of it. The picture on the left is what helped me understand what edges were. I remember having that picture for a good 2-3 years until it "clicked",

Ctrlpaint videos helped me correalte digital to traditional, and I also understand traditional usage much better. I was struggling in PS until I tinkered with brushes and settings, and emulated traditional painting until it made sense. Understanding how to use the brushes in your favorite program is really helpful for eliminating that beginner crude brushwork look. There are still a lot of factors, but this will be a start.

To tell you the truth I don't think edge work is a real big problem. If you know how to softly gradate with a pencil or blend with a stump, or draw in hard shadows, you subconsciously already know how to do edge work.

no idea what fly away or stepped is, but it's probably a variation of hard and soft.

they're all soft apart from hard in fact. all edges are a degree of softness.

a fly-away edge is like hair.

a stepped edge is where you use intermediate tones/colours.

hatching an edge in painting usually makes it pretty soft.

these are techniques for making edges rather than a degree of firmness.

the 4-edge thing is for analysis really, the 7-edge thing is how you paint.

to master edginess you need both!

Hello guys. I hope this is related.

I have a serious problem with not finishing anything. I started pic related over a month ago. I spent a few hours on it and then gave up. After an hour, I started a new drawing that I didn't finish again. I tried getting into art a year ago, I bought a tablet and everything but now I'm stuck. just came across the sketchbook of Dot on CA.org.

then i read alot of encouraging and uplifting posts by others, as replies of what apparently was a bit of a depressed rant he wrote. the pressures of the freelance life probably.

i got a bit scared because his work seemed quite strong to me, so i spend some time digging up his site and work and it really looks like he has given up on art alltogheter. didn't he use to post here? what happened to me?

take a couple months of life drawing, and use fat drawing materials on a large drawing pad(newsprint) you'll dump that sketchy line quickly.

As long as it's acid free it's decent paper. Different sketchpads react differently to what materials you use. Some have a little bit of a feedback. They might take pencils, pens or markers better than others. Some might absorb sweat or moisture differently. Some have a middle tone to them to practice value.

If you want a hardback there is moleskin, picadilly, canson. They all make nice sketchpads. But even a grocery store pad will handle ballpoint pens differently. They just might not handle your moisture that well, and the feedback might be awful.

It's fucking retarded and I'll regret to my dying day ditching my older edition for a new one that I bought purely because the old one was in rough shape. I assumed they had the same exercises and same material requirements but I was wrong. Dead wrong. I have no idea how to even begin following along with the book now that there's all this babby crap amended to it.

Anyway all you really need to read and do in Betty Edwards' book is like the first and second chapters or so; she has the best way of explaining and teaching observational drawing out there. After that point it's all a bunch of bullshit that's better taught by other authors, Loomis etc.

I've been doing so many gestures but I still can't get close to this level of movement. I care about anatomical accuracy, but not as much as the liveliness of a figure.

If money is that much of an issue for you, and you're skimping out on the size (Small really is... small), don't get a Wacom.

UC Logic (Monoprice, Huion, etc), and UGEE tablets are fine. There's more but I can't think of anything; but the Internet and (personal) reviews are your friend here.

And no, lack of an eraser on a pen isn't an issue. I used to have one on my old Wacom tablet that broke and switched to a non-eraser tablet pen, and I totally forgot about it until you're mentioned it.

Hell, I'd argue it's better to not use one because it's faster to key 'e' (or whatever your eraser tool is set at) than to reverse the pen. Not to mention that the pen tip has more sensitivity than the eraser, and is more accurate.

$480 is a fucking lot, dude. You can get something solid for just 1/4-1/5 of that.

Animation. The best animators have awesome movement in their sketches, so study what they studied. Tons of quick sketches and gestures, life drawing doing studies as the model moves around the room or performs certain movements, creating animations and such, the whole deal. I think it's a shame animation principles aren't encouraged more on here, you can learn so much from artists like Glen Keane when it comes to gesture and movement.

My Monoprice tablet's drivers for some reason disables my laptop (Lenovo G500)'s keyboard drivers, but it's a very uncommon issue. I'm probably one in a handful of people who have that issue, according to what I've searched for help-wise.

I think it might be an issue with some programs (SAI maybe?). Do some research on that, I guess. I've used it on PS CS3-6 and it's been fine.

And they are not reproductions, they are completely different products. This is important to consider.

The quality is fine (and I've dropped my tablet a few times because I kicked the cord). Only issue is, or at least with Monoprice (don't have experience with the other UC Logic and UGEE tablets) is that the default pens are constructed very cheaply, and you'd have to buy a separate pen to replace it as it'll break given several months of use. The pens are cheap, especially in comparison to an Intuos pen (like, $10 USD)

As for the batteries, it's not really an issue. The pen might feel a little heavy for a while because of the battery, but eventually you don't even notice it. For me it feels like absolutely nothing, as I've used mine daily for 2+ years. Batteries last a long time too, even on the default batteries.

Also comes with a lot of spare nibs.

I think you definitely should. Drawing in a small scale is way easier than drawing on a big sheet of paper. I struggled with charcoal at first, but it gives a very natural feeling to the drawing. Try by getting the biggest items down pat first and work your way down to the smallest items.

eh calm down, it's not that big a deal. You have to be nice to other artists. Maybe one day kid crimson will be putting clothes on your back or blacklisting you from the industry.

Not that anon, but...
It's from a band, I think. A S.O. I had loved this band, sounds like every person that likes this band is sorta psycho about it and wants to put it in everything as reference. It's not even the first one I saw that wants to rip off something from the band because it is "FUCK SO AMAZING LIKE THE BEST EVER BRO SRSLY". Their friends were a blast, maybe that anon would like them a lot. A bunch of young males crazy about King Crimson.

Something like those girls that liked Backstreet Boys back then and used everything about "Backstreet Boys", but now it changed to probably a young male and "King Crimson".

It'll be under your privacy settings somewhere anon, either switch general privacy settings to Public (Everyone), or go find the setting specifically for your photos and make them public.

My question's about ink and scratchboards. I'm fascinated with that medium at the moment, pic related, and been filling my sketchbook with terrible pen sketches to experiment with it. I'm not sure how to take it to the next step though, does anyone know of any good tutorials for it? I'll be making a digital workflow for it but I want to keep it as close to how Doré and such would work as possible, no gradients or little cheats to make it faster.

Has anyone here found it worthwhile to copy the bargue plates or better yet, mucha's plates?

I'm about to try this as I'm desperate for new ways to improve and challenge myself, but I'm wondering if it's truly worth the time and effort compared to other studies?
