This isn't my artwork, but it has to do with my next comment. He was a big influence on me.

>Were anime cons 30 years ago as comfy as they seem?
There was no such thing as cosplay - in America, anyway. The dealers' room had lots of books like the kind we prize here... of course, now you can get all of those for free on E-H. Also, I met Kenichi "Gunsmith Cats" Sonoda in person; Leiji Matsumoto (Captain Harlock, Space Battleship Yamato, Galaxy Express) cancelled at the last minute when a close family friend passed away.

>Would you say these are only good for historical value, or would they be useful for someone leaning into an older style?
I think they *would* be useful. I'm very fond of older styles, and these would fit right in.

As to >>4984029's point, they are definitely geared toward traditional style; even the setups talk about tools (pencils, pens, inks, tone sheets, etc.) and papers.

>Which artists are you thinking of studying for the Muse Challenge?
Kenichi Sonoda, and maybe Masamune Shirow if I do two

>do you know any other similar artists in that style-era genre
Hmmm... that's tough. Shirow is my absolute favourite. Other artists from around the same time have *some* elements of style in common with him, but I don't know how much it would appeal to you.

I also like Hayao Miyazaki. Yes, *that* Miyazaki. He's mostly famous for directing films these days, but if you've read the Nausicaa manga, or see his drawings for Porco Rosso and Laputa, you might get what I like about him. I still think Lupin III and the Castle of Cagliostro is the best animated movie ever made.

Kenichi Sonoda designed the human characters for the original Bubblegum Crisis, and created Gunsmith Cats and its spin-off, Riding Bean.

Kia Asamiya is probably best known - if anybody on this board remembers it - for Silent Möbius. He also drew the manga adaption for the live-action movie Gunhed, and did some work for the Japanese version of Battletech (as did Sonoda).

There's Johji Manabe, who drew Outlanders and Thunder Jet Rai. He described his own work as "beautiful girls with swords." There's quite a bit ofr Outlanders stuff out there, but ... well, there's a lot of stuff out there, and not as much time to read any more.

Finally, how about Shuuhou Itahashi? His one big shot was Ai City, was animated in the late 80's. He also illustrated a fantastic Alice-in-Wonderland-esque manga called Cyber 7, but the company that was translating it into English never finished it, and nobody else on the Internet besides me seems to remember anything else about it.

I love Sonoda, too, but Shirow is still tops in my book.

>Hey /ic/, which anime/manga artstyle are you trying to emulate?
>Are you studying an specific artist? Or just the general style of the time?

Masamune Shirow is my favourite artist, but I never seem to able to approach his style. It's like if Tom Clancy could have illustrated his own novels like Geoff Darrow did for Frank Miller.

Instead, my art tends to resemble the aesthetic of 80's anime - probably because that's what I remember most fondly. Kenichi Sonoda (pic related) would be a perfect example.
