So I'm supposed to hold the wacom pencil like pic related? Am I also supposed to sharpen the plastic until it looks like that?

IS there any advantage in using this grip? Besides shading of course.

Fuck the dynamic sketching drawabox autism that gets peddled to beginners. Fuck tablets. Fuck "only draw in pen to gain confidence". Fuck the ipad. Fuck everything but this. Every beginner should start with the overhand grip and a pencil. It's literally the easiest way to learn how to draw. Save the technical drafting one-shot-one-kill inking bullshit for when you actually know how it feels to convey form on the page in the first place.

Will my gains come faster if I draw like this?

You'll end up fucking up your hand in the long run. Try using an overhand grip with the pencil to discourage wrist movement rather than holding it like you would if you were writing.

do more quick gesture from reference and maybe try drawing them doing something instead of just posing for the camera. If they're doing something they would in life then I imagine that should bring the pose to life.

Drawing overhand doesn't make you a better artist and it's extremely impractical with tablet pens given they're usually relatively fat and short at the end. Look at the pencil in pic related, the way it's sharpened makes it so there's an actual advantage to holding it this way and drawing with it this way. Tbh from what I was taught when I went to an atelier half a year ago his pencil lead is way too fat too.

Why do some artist fucking do this, i mean, i can barely scrap by using a normal-ass grip while some motherfucker sketches a masterpiece doing this weird shit.

Just keep practicing, man! Practice it often and there's no reason you can't get better, even if it seems like it at first. As far as gesturing is concerned, some good things to keep in mind is to work on large paper so you have plenty of room to let your hand go wild. It can also be good to give yourself a time limit (even just a couple of seconds) to draw any figure out, that way you have to scramble and get the most clear, exaggerated form possible. Also, something that my professor taught me when I took a figure drawing class is that sometimes holding your pencil a different way than you normally do for drawing can be helpful when doing gestures. I started holding my pencil like in pic relate and it's helped a lot with having a more natural, gestural feel. (And sorry if this is all super obvious stuff you know already, just figured I'd throw out a few tips)

Ballpoint is a pretty tough medium when you're starting out. I recommend sticking to pencil. Make sure you use construction - LOOMIS - (you do not need to read every single page all at once, just focus on the head and facial construction at first) . Also, mainly use the overhanded pencil holding technique to draw. A good tip is to not draw lines with the tip of the pencil: use the side, this will allow you to create broader 'lines' which are easier to erase.

I had considerable gains within 8 months by drawing at least one face each day. I had a couple weeks off throughout when I really wasn't feeling it. In order to improve you need to compare and contrast between your drawing and your ref. At first don't practice imagination, do that at a later, improved state, right now you don't have the visual library to base your sketches off of.

Good luck! If you really want to be a competent draftsmen and not disappoint your future self you'll reach a point where you will be slightly proud of your work - then you'll realise its not good enough and you'll want to improve. But at that point it gets easier as the results from your daily sketches show your learned knowledge in at least one aspect. Remember that you don't have to rush either, people online like to show off and do speed paints but you need to remember that they have years of experience. I hope I helped :)

He means this

That was actually a question I was about to ask the thread: I use this hold a lot, helps me draw from my arm/shoulder instead of my wrist, would hate not using it on a tablet. Is it not possible at all in any of the pens?

(Tried it on my Intuos, doesn't work)

How do you guys hold the pencil? What is the best grip? The tripod grip comes naturally to me, but the overhand grip offers more freedom of movement but I'm really clumsy with it. How much do you think it matters in the long run?

Is there any tablet that kind of supports the overhand grip? I find drawing in this position to be so much more comfortable for me.

Dynamic Sketching is pen only, no pencils allowed. Proko has a nice video on youtube explaining what he uses, how he sharpens it, holds it and draws from the shoulder. He used to go to Jeff Watts atelier, so they teach the same thing there. I picked up their technique and can definitely recommend it.

I haven't timed it or anything but I'd say at least 16 hours or so, probably at least double that. Which for me is more than enough considering I just charge the pen at night.

>>2078783

exactly, you would think wacom would come out with a tablet or cintiq that works more like a charcoal/conte pencil instead of just slightly improving there existing technology.

I would happily pay 400 percent more if it meant I could draw with a overhand grip and get reasonable control and accuracy with it.

How far back do you hold your tablet pen? I find that the friction of my hand touching the tablet makes my lines imprecise.

I cant hold the pen like I would a pencil, the nib unfortunately is too short.
