So I'm studing the head construction in a 3/4 view but I can't quite grasp the complete concept of the Rilley method. Someone has a sheet or something that I can use for the abstraction technique? I'm currently trying with this one but it doesn't have the view I'm looking for. Thanks in advance lads

and the head/cranium shape is most accurately simplified by the sphere or the egg shape. I mean, you have to start with something, why are you so against starting the most logical 3 dimensional representation? Are you saying you should start by drawing the outline of the head instead of working with structure? Because that is literally what every good draftsman and teacher advises against. It makes your heads end up flat and out of perspective. Especially when you have to draw a head from a difficult angle.

Yeah, but Loomis drawings are fairly plausible depictions of humans. His construction isn't stylized, it's just a simple basis that can be used for anything from highly stylized cartoons to realism. I really don't see what your problem is with Loomis using simplified forms as abstraction for anatomy. I mean, it's just the most logical way of drawing to go from simple to complex. Not just Loomis does that, everyone from Vilppu, to Reilly to Bridgeman to Hampton uses shape simplification to properly construct something.

I've got them from this facebook page /hinh.hoa.nghien.cuu/?fref=ts

For the specific album they came from you'll have to scroll down a bit, but the site generally posts very good pencil drawings and a bunch of pages from Chinese books and whatnot.

Nathan Fowkes uses the Reilly method. Unfortunately no one ever bothered to rip his charcoal portrait drawing classes.

I'm not familiar with the way Jeff does it, but this looks pretty much exactly like how Nathan Fowkes does it. So it's probably quite accurate, considering Nathan has nothing to do with Watts Atelier and still learnt the exact same Reily method construction. As to why Jeff deviates from the example, I have no idea.

Always start from simplicity and build complexity on top of it. Especially as a beginner. Your biggest mistakes will be in the first 1/3rd of your drawings, so take extra care during those crucial simple steps where you establish volume, perspective, and proportion.

Nigga please, most good entertainment artists are better than you will ever be at art, regardless what label you put on it.
