just draw, trace, and study the desired artwork

I want to make it clear that I didn't fall for it, it is just a certainty that someone else has the same problem and isn't brave enough to say anything.

Visual library. And yes it does, however rather than just copying you should copy with the purpose of reconstructing something so you can draw it entirely from memory.

not really neccessary I agree, but it allows you to see what kinda effect studying had after comparing a horse from imagination before and after studying some whores

The shrimp study is somewhat related. I didn't really studied anything before drawing it untill I did this. It's common sense, but I apparently needed this to slap me in the face.

If you are studying form, then no. Then there is nothing wrong with tracing. Tracing should help you learn form. Be sure to apply what you learn when you draw from imagination.

were you using loomis for 3/4 heads? I couldn't get it before either til I tried other head construction methods like the Reilly abstraction and Asaro heads

grinding can get really dry and boring, but you'll definitely see results if you keep doing mindful studies of them. See pic related too.

Tracing allows you to see what a perfect copy would look like (you learn quickly not to represent teeth with straight lines, you figure out how you can represent an entire flower field with texture). Copying forces you to pay attention to your drawing habits (I tend to draw the nose huge compared to the rest of the face, I now know I need to correct my habit of doing this) and is much easier to critique than a drawing from imagination.

That's how it always should be. You can still do a single polished leg as long as it's done regularly and you got something out of that study. That is to say one shouldn't also do mindless grinding. Every study has to be mindful and needs to be done regularly

desu I don't venture into beg and I rarely critique. I'm not saying I know all my shit but I do know some things. Mostly everything I know came from the internet. I haven't received a lot of critique in my art journey, but I know what I want to aim for. I compare my work with artists I admire. Lots of people say not to do this, but I want to improve & I'm aware that I won't get to that level in a couple days.

You can find all the material you need if you search the right places. Look in the link in >>3471486 for the big sticky and find recommended books. Make an account on cgpeers, get those books, or buy them. i don't know your moral code
Tomorrow, the 15th, cgpeers should be open for registrations, please sign up if you haven't already

Download books from the artbook thread
reach out to others and ask what they are doing to improve
etc.

Study, When you learn something new, apply it to a new piece of art you make from only imagination.
I generally do:
>Learn something
>Do Studies looking at the material
>Might look for more examples (ex: learning how to paint/render gold. Look for images on google of gold in a warm/cold/neutral environment and study those and observe how gold reflecting the environment it's in changes it's color)
>Put away the material -Test out if I really know it (sometimes it's a sketch, sometimes a whole piece)
> After finishing, compare it with what you learned
> Ask yourself questions, make observations, take note of what you did well and what you need work on.
> Study more on your weakpoints
> Continue making art with your new knowledge

But of course, I'm only human and I might change my approach over time. Find what works for you. Watch interviews with artists you respect and learn what they did to get at that level. Form your own path and shit like that

also NEVER FALL FOR THE STUDYING 24/7 MEME. You should always be making art from imagination alongside your studies. You need a healthy balance. Learn from my mistakes

>Like, I understand internally that i shouldn't be blindly copying, and to take into account the construction of the figure, how it represents actual form in 3d space, but I find myself depending on contours anyway to create something remotely presentable or proportionally accurate.
I guess another thing is we are easily overwhelmed with what things to study first, which further paralyzes oneself. Just take it small baby steps. Slow and steady, you don't have to rush absorbing all the fundies available in the sticky.

> how to study?
pic related might help.
>1. Draw from imagination. Evaluate what needs to be improved
>2. Draw from reference. Evaluate and compare from the source image
>Do this 20+ times until you understand how your study subject is drawn
