Please do. It's not ¨copying¨, drawing from life is one of the best ways to improve and will absolutely not hamper your creative skills in any way.
I'd love to see your life drawings (if you have any), but judging from that portrait, you could use some studies, especially regarding stuff like facial structure and anatomy
