Not a lie.
I've gotten a 8k likes post once and it got me 50 followers, the numbers are pretty dismal.

Then I've made a more niche type of artwork (for a tighter community) and got 1200 likes + 100 followers, the optimal thing to do, if you worry about this, is both "pandering", but at the same time having a limited scope to your fanbase.

Making generic, trend-hoping art only works if your userbase is so big, there will be bound to have enjoyers of any niche among your followers to give you numbers on any sort of trend you hop into.
