Start with Hugo Pratt and go from there, not the same mix of styles, but his influence on eurocomics is obvious. I don't know much about eurocomics because I'm too lazy to learn french and pirate the good ones.

It seems to be a matter of starting from the idea of heavily rendered "realism" and being able to abbreviate features down to the usual anime symbols. Then you can work in the same "style" by varying how much you draw and render.
