Especially as a beginner, yes, you are supposed to use references. not necessarily to out right copy/trace but
to take from the reference the knowledge you need to apply to your own drawing when it comes to proportions/prespective etc

Steve Huston's probably the guy I'd send an absolute beginner to for general drawing info. But after that, you should go to Vilppu, for more detailed and comprehensive instruction.
