It's not brilliantly designed it's brilliantly marketed, Mickey Mouse is only relevant because Disney's maskot is basically him, he's on par with Ronald Mc Donald and the Coca Cola logo. It's an international symbol of a country and not even a character at this point.

All his design is stolen from other works that Walt himself didn't even produce.

And design wise, Mickey has terrible design since it gives no info of the character whatsoever, it shows no personality traits he's just an anthropomorphic mouse.
