He's competent, but even when his art is technically acceptable, the result is usually very unappealing; it's got a old-fashioned feel to it, and not in a good way.

It's probably the product of his obsession of defining his own approach and methods as the "proper way" instead of finding a middle ground between classic textbook notions that are safe to use as ersatz authority, and modern techniques and resources that could help him improve and explore ways of making his stuff fresher.

In other words: he's too focused on being a defensive self-righteous douchebag to make anything of himself.
