Please, $40,000 per semester art school faculty, teach me to be a master like Duchamp. His incredible, prophetic art centered on profound, contemplative themes such as "things being put somewhere where they normally aren't" still gives me chills a hundred years later.

While they're having you run around in circles thinking about how to arrange a pile of trash you could be drawing, or sculpting, or doing literally anything which would be far more useful to you and congruent with your interests. They're wasting your time with bullshit like this because to them, you're a resource that's already spent.

Leave, dude.

>DA ART SCHOOLS IS GOOD BOYS
>THEY DIDN'T EVEN BE DOIN' NUFFIN', DAWG

As tumblr would say, this is "Victim Blaming".

It's not the student who tithes the school for tens of thousands of dollars over the decades following their graduation.

The schools have one important job apart from teaching art (which many of them fail miserably at already) and that's to keep delusional not-going-to-make-its from attending in the first place for their own good, and believe me they see enough students come and go first hand to where they can tell if they've got even a snowball's chance in hell of making it or not.

Conversely, the student itself, their friends and parents are by default completely ignorant of what the work of a good art school prospect looks like so they certainly can't be blamed for encouraging the student to attend an art school thinking they'll get somewhere.

As far as online learning goes I'd say that...

newmastersacademy.com and proko.com are the best and most consistent places to learn drawing fundamentals and techniques online. Proko might not be the best humorist at times but how he supplements solid drawing instruction with 3D models and animation is incredibly helpful.

The library at ctrpaint.com is great for digital painting specifically

...and If you're interested in animation, this is the nigga.

I bought Aaron Blaise's videos too and they're definitely good, but this is free and he touches up on pretty much all of the same stuff. His static illustrations might be cringe-tier but thankfully he really knows his shit when it comes to animation in practice.

Mess around with these exhaustive resources for at least 3 years. Consider school only after that, particularly if you get good enough to rake in a scholarship. Unless you were a straight A+ student and there's a lot of free money riding on you picking a school right out of highschool there is absolutely no reason to go to art college right after you graduate. Get a part time job (20 hours max) to support yourself and break up the monotony.

The atelier I go to is a non-profit with only a couple dozen students. I just take one class a week and it costs $170 for 10 weeks. It's not bad. You can also go full time for 8k a year but that's completely voluntary. Much better than most art schools where you have no choice but to go full time and spend 50 thousand a year in the process.

Here's an edgy idea.

Drop out of school, get a job, marry a woman, raise a happy family, and teach your kids never to go to an art 'school' that would coerce you into making a fool of yourself in front of a camera for their amusement.

That's SAIC, one of those kinds of schools that is absolutely unfit to host a single student. Looks like there are a few unfortunate graduates in that very thread.

>9 out of 10 art schools have no staff on hand that can teach tangible representational art skills to their students

>these schools voluntarily choose to bankrupt thousands of young people a year and are well aware they are doing so at the stroke of a pen

>it's the students' and their parents' fault for assuming that their local art school would be able to teach them how to produce anything beyond fingerpaintings and macaroni pictures and what the word "composition" means

You're mostly right, however...

Do not blame the parents, in fact they often bear a large portion of the burden of their children's debt. Both the parents and their children are victims of the school's misgivings, not any other way around.

These schools see thousands of students pass through their halls each year and they know full well that with few exceptions these kids are completely fucking their entire lives up financially to make edgy macaroni pictures, and the admittance staff actively choose to encourage them to do so without so much as a portfolio review being necessary for entry.

Many of these students graduate completely brainwashed, with a high opinion of the school and staff despite its heinous transgressions against them, their future and their career.

Here's a great video on art school from a pro animator on youtube. I messaged him personally and he was nice enough to give an hour long response to my inquiry. Worth a watch if you have the time or want something to listen to in the background while you're drawing. He's very diplomatic about the subject at the beginning and in the end. "It depends on you" is his conclusion, but in reading between the lines when it comes to his anecdotal experience you might come up with a contrary view.
