if that's your picture I'd suggest doing the ink shading like you're doing, maybe crosshatch areas. I find the best way to get good lighting/shading is just set one light source. As for the color of your shadows, NEVER use just a darker version of the same color. Play around with other colors to get a good color combo just with the shadows and lights alone; like choose from a triadic color combination.
