I repost this image quite a bit, but peter hans dynamic sketching is exactly what you need to be doing I think. simplify, see the shape, then you can put the shape into perspective and build the details on top,.

theres enough time in a day for everything.
spend an hour or 2 on boxes. then the rest of the time drawing what you want.

id watch peter han dynamic sketching pic related. you can draw things and practice boxes at the same time. kinda.

fuck sketchbooks, they are overpriced, get a roll of packing paper instead, besides, if you want it for practice, there is no point wasting sketchbooks with shitty looking exercises

also, if you are going for toned paper (which you are) be sure to get some kind of white pen for highlights to get that Peter Hans look down. its quite easy to do and it makes the sketches pop out nicely - see pic related
(little effort for great results)

erh... im not a gud drawer I only know how to see things, I think it depends whose method you follow.
eg this is peter hans fish from dynamic sketching series.

I think having a centre line defiantly helps. so you can establish the perspective vanishing point, then you can work out the correct placement of everything else.

just do this lightly. then you can concentrate on drawing a photorealistic shark over the top.

its more a case of this is what you should be doing in your head, but its okay to do it on paper till it comes naturally.
