Study the fundamentals, but apply them to whatever you're interested in instead of life. Take your favorite cartoons/illustrations, break them down into shapes with construction, see how it works, build them back up with all the illustration style shading and color theory stuff, oh and perspective too.

When studying from masters, instead of copying from I don't know Rembrandt or Michelangelo, copy from Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Clampett, Franzetti, Kirby, Thomas Nast, the guyss who did illustrations for Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz.

Spend some time studying from life too, but don't do it exclusively. Focus more on making observations and getting ideas than on perfectly rendering something to look just like reality.

That's my plan anyway, but I'm just a beginner so don't take my word for it.
