Gestures are more to capture the flow/motion and general measurements of the figure. They can be used just for practice, but more importantly so you can get something down quickly on the paper that is accurate and natural, and that you can build upon to get a good finished drawing. Exactly how much info you include varies by the artist, but it’s fairly common to have a bit of simple torso structure, then quick, simple lines to capture the gesture of the limbs.
