Boxes can help with weird angles, and even if the expressions aren't realistic, that doesn't mean they can't be translated to "3D" with moderate success depending on how you construct the 2.5D aspects.

However, this drawing here only uses two cubes with a diagonal cross on them and then, outside of drawing the entire eyeball, seems to only draw the contours of the form instead of the construction.
Yet somehow, this drawing comes out a thousand times better than the one with construction.
