what you are describing could be a very common growing pain of a beginner, or the brief, painful cry of a permabeg who ascended into self-awareness for a moment lel

how long have you been drawing? give us a feel for how intensely you are practicing, perhaps even pyw

>There's the idea of "just bee yourself" which I like, but when I always end up with jank-ass faces or squished/elongated proportions, bee'ing myself feels bad. I want the ability to CHOOSE to make a jank-ass face if that's what I'm feeling, rather than being tethered to that.
i am sure 99% of artists experience this one way or the other. for me it is less frustrating than for you simply because i have moved my "be yourself" type of drawing close enough to what i *want* through a lot of mileage
but still i have the same problem. drawing in a non-energy-draining way results in messy (albeit pretty) sketches, but consciously elevating a sketch to the next level of quality feels like hard work and is exhausting. you are at the very least not alone or dysfunctional in that regard

>1) just grinding through and gitting gud. Like building muscle or early math or programming fundamentals.
>2) a mindset thing, of somehow appreciating the process of depicting things accurately.
honestly, i dont know which is right, or if its a mix of the two. i personally "decided" to believe that #1 is true, and stuck with it. i still need to focus in the "exhausting" kind of way to create accuracy above my average, but i found that with more mileage, more grinding, more practice my accuracy improved while the amount of work / focus / exhaustion / frustration is needed have stayed at a tolerable level. but this is such a complicated and vague subject, i might be wrong, or it might actually depend on every persons personality...?!
