I'm so proud of how much participation this thread has gotten without me. Thank you anon for giving the participants the critiques they deserve, and thank you all who've participated thus far-I can see this thread is in good hands. Unfortunately I still don't have the new chart done as I've been uncharacteristically busy as late, but it won't be long, now®. Keep it going, guys. I-...I'll be back!

Just draw what you love and let it be messy as fuck, don't go for pretty right now. How old are you, OP? My love for art didn't come naturally, I needed to ignite the fires of passion myself (kek). Motivation will get you nowhere, what you need is a reason to pull you back in each time. Why do you paint? I paint because that is when I am most happy, because I love improving myself and I love looking at art and making it. Don't wait for someone to push you or for magical motivation, you have to take the reigns of your own life and mind and only then will you stop having art blocks. If you start now in 5 years you'll look back and say "Wow, I was terrible! Look at how much I've improved!" but for that to happen, you have to start drawing towards those five years. Do it with goals, too, never draw aimlessly or you'll get nowhere. Good luck, OP.

Ah to be young again.

I think the quickest way to unlock someone's observational drawing abilities is have them do "dots" on tracing paper (I think this is an early exercise in Keys to Drawing:

Make dots on one sheet of paper, set that paper aside, observe and try and recreate, and then compare. Do that a couple dozen times. From there move on to the upside down Picasso (you could even do something like an upside down line drawing or sketch of something she actually might like to draw like a disney character or something https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/9e/48/19/9e4819a3055abea4b38f0ab4777b1022.jpg).).

What I'd do for a real young person moving even further forward is encourage them to draw a Mr. Potato head from life (gotta keep it fun, son-if you're funny and charismatic you should be able to keep it from coming across as patronizing, which is important). First I'd try and stress observational techniques like negative space, comparative measurement "Bargue" type shit etc, then move on to things like construction/perspective/Fun With a Pencil stuff in actual books from there.

Pretty much this

Money is important, but next to your life it's a mostly arbitrary thing. If you'd rather die than be in debt than you need to reassess your priorities, fambino. If you're poor already your quality of life won't even be affected much. Having $0 or having -$100,000 who cares, there isn't anything they can take from you that is worth more than your life, you goof. Go to the doctor before it's too late, figure out what if anything needs to be done, and then talk to a debt consolidator after the fact to help you make your payments.

>I'd rather die than not be able to get a home or vehicle loan

This is pretty much what you're saying right now. Even if you're burdened by incredible debt you will still be able to buy consumer goods and food as normal. You will be limited in some ways, yeah. Being in debt is awful but don't give it more power than it already has; you are not your bank account.

I'm glad to hear that. Please keep in mind that, moreso than rejecting school outright as a rule, I just want you to give yourself a chance and to not take on the enormous financial risk of an american art college without spending at least four years on your own using cheaper alternatives.

W-...we're all gonna make it!

It's as I said, Watts Atelier emphasizes comparative measurement painting (not sight-size), whereas the Atelier I attend conversely is sight-size in the strictest sense. Comparative measurement, though also a manner of observational drawing, would actually have a bit more overlap with imaginative drawing than the sight-size stuff my Atelier teachers and this makes my situation all the more dubious. That's all I was getting at.

I still have faith in the Atelier system as a foil to the "art school" as such, but I also think Proko's two hour long gaffe has taught us all a valuable lesson in not completely relying on any arbitrary methodology and bids us give personal experimentation at least as much attention.

Thing is a pretty big step backward imho. It has the same (deficient) active area as the H1060 pro but it's almost twice as expensive. It has half the hotkeys and they're broken up by a gimmicky touchpad in their place. Shake my head. Here's hoping a true successor to the Giano is in the works. There's pretty much no reason for this thing to exist.

Also dig this shit boys. I found a bunch of places in my area that do life drawing for free, maybe some of you will too.

>Why not just lock yourself in your own bathroom or something

Not nearly enough room for me or my supplies my man.

>Why are you paying $1500 a year to go sit in a storage unit and draw?

To be honest I'm paying $1500 a year to store my stuff more than anything, it just so happens that I have enough room to put a couple tables in there for my art and printing equipment (I plan on printing posters/prints out of there). It's also good exercise; it's a little over a 3 mile bike ride.

Feng Zhu said something which has proved more or less true for me. He said basically that trying to work in the same room where you sleep, play and so on is distracting. So, apart from having a place where I can keep my stuff in limbo before I move out, I've got a nice little "office", too.

>There are programs that literally lock you out of the internet

I might try that out, but I still have well-meaning but nosy parents to contend with. The storage unit is practically perfect in all but a few unfortunate circumstances.
