back then the board was waaaay slower than it is now. When you know a thread might be up for days before it even gets its first reply, you are more willing to spend a few hours to make a drawing especially for that thread. Also, back then, if you checked the catalog every few hours, there would be high changes for nothing new to have been posted, or even bumped. So anons were more willing to put in the time to make a post which, hopefully, would make the board give a few hearth bits back in respond.

Nowadays, threads are so fast, if you spend a few hours to make a drawing in response to OP, theres high changes he already got 30 other low effort comments (loomis, pyw, blog?, read sticky, >>>/beg/, tattoos are shit, hi sycra), so your drawing might get a few (you)s, if its good, but most likely it will be ignored. So anons have less incentive to put in the time. to make what you see here >>4199264. Also, because of the high activity of the board, you do not feel the need to make a drawing to force a respond, to make the board post something, because in the time you read a thread, 5 others where created, and after you read all the interesting stuff in the catalog, a few hours passed, so you dont have the energy left to draw something, or have work to get back to.

The board can still make a bunch of drawings together (see the recent connected map threads, or the draw this in your style), but because of the high population of the board, it needs a strong and good organization for that to happen. You cant expect that to happen out of thin air like in that pic anymore, too many will butt in.

Its like irl, if you have a few friends, spontaneous parties can happen all the time and they are fun as heck, (dumb too). But when you have hundreds of acquaintances, you need good organization if you want parties to happen, and even then they dont feel as fun as the smaller ones.
