Using a grid will often become a crutch and will weaken your observation skills, so use it with caution. First attempt it without a grid, then use it to check where you went wrong, turn it off and fix your mistakes. This is so you can identify your mistakes and fix them, that's how you actually learn something. You may find you make the same kind of measuring mistake every time, like always making everything too long, so then you can deliberately practice that weakness.
There a lots of ways to measure without a grid too, having all of these in your tool belt is much better than having to rely on a grid.

So if you want to improve at observation drawing, I recommend reading one of the two books mentioned.
I am going to drop the pictures I think will help you too.

Think about what you are drawing in the ways this images describes. Look at the angles of things, look an plumb lines (how things line up with each other, look at the negative space. Try not to even think about what is is you are drawing.

It's not long enough at the chin and it's too wide at her mandible on both sides. Try measuring her facial proportions using the eye width as your unit of measure, if you go straight down from the eye to the mandible, how many eyes down is it? How many eyes across? How many eyes from the bottom of the lip to the chin? This should help you out.

Don't be afraid to lightly sketch in things like plumb lines to help you measure things out, it's very helpful especially with trying to get the likeness of a face down correctly.

Like the other guy said, you should become more self proficient. Beginners that are gonna make it know how to find what they need to get better.

So here you go.

Ooh, that's looking pretty good. Try pic related for visual measuring, I find plumb lines help when you're working with digital.

Also you are mainly working in midtones, so it looks washed out. Put some more darks and lights in there man!

>Should I draw a simplified version of the image with geometric shapes and add details little by little?
mostly that, yes
>Should I draw a gesture-version of the image I'm trying to draw and build on that?
gesture can be different for each person. you have to find your way of doing it.
>Also some tutorials say I should go by shape, while someone posted a video a couple of days ago that I should draw following form.
not sure what that means but avoid following the contours. as a general rule, work from general to details. you can adjust for your comfort somewhat, as long as it works.

here's a pretty good picture. for everything you put on the paper, you're always doing a little bit of each of these, but none is THE way to do it, and it's never perfect. always try out what you're told or read about, if you don't feel like it's helping, set it aside and do something else, and maybe try it again later. always try to do things and see for yourself, but don't treat it like gospel.

Use a mirror.
Take breaks
Look the drawing from a long distance.
Simplify shadows to see more shapes and angles.
Study Block-in with the Bargue Course with natural media
Practice a lot.

All this is what some people say is the answer for accuarcy.

i think you're on the right track, just keep practicing. here's something that might help with proportions. drawing is just measuring after all. your problem isn't hand eye coordination, it's how you're thinking about drawing.
