There's no exact formulas of when and how to use these blending modes. But Schoolism's Intro classes and Ctrl+Paint have a good section explaining what they really do. You can also look at tutorials from photo editors. But even then, you can only get a gist of how they work through tutorials, a lot of trial-error would be needed to better understand them.

But remember that understanding colors are vastly, immeasurably more important. You don't even need to use layer modes if you understand how light and color works. If you're just starting, I might even advise you not to use it and instead paint directly Alla Prima-style to better understand how colors play with each other. Layer modes can actually slow you down if you're not very experienced with painting.
