Everything you said is true. There are certainly a million advantages working in 3D as opposed to 2D. But here's my honest opinion: there is something magical about 2D art that cannot be captured in 3D.

3D is too real. 2D allows you to do things - proportions, art styles - that, while certainly possible, would not work in 3D because you'd get into this sort of uncanny valley. You cannot stretch and push shapes the way you do in 2D. I mean, look at hentai. There is a ton of top-tier hentai done in 2D but the CGI ones just lack that soul.

People shit on the calarts and newgrounds styles a lot, but if you apply the same argument to CGI it's even worse. There are only so many styles you can pull off in 3D art; it's almost as if "CG" is a style in itself instead of a medium.

If you want to churn out concept art that looks like every other CGI concept art out there, you definitely should be working in 3D. And if you want to "make it" into the industry, and the industry is looking for CG artists, then you should study CG. This is a no brainer.

But that is certainly not the case. Concept art is still very much done in 2D because it can capture SO MUCH more soul. 3D is rigid, real. 2D is free flowing, strokes on a piece of paper.

Open any concept art book for any CGI movie and you'll find all the concept work is 2D with artists using their own very distinct styles.

So yes, there are certainly situations and jobs where you might want to study 3D. But saying it's obsolete is either you just baiting or coming from a lack of understanding of how the industry actually works.

Also, as you said, a good artist can push out a million 2D concepts while you noodle about with polygons and edges.

Anyway, that's my 2c. You do you :)
