your original statement that I responded to wasn't really an argument. /ic/ looks like a shithole when people like muah post their art. You'd have to qualify what "shithole" means to you. Because I'm pretty sure there's probably a literal shithole in the catalog right meow. Also how is that bad advice? If you're burned out with drawing, maybe try advancing out of /beg/ into new and challenging things? Granted (you) personally are not going to make it, or anything, and you'll be doing your family a flavor when you kill yourself.

it all helps. It's all part of knowing how to art. If you don't have experience doing graphite transfers or tracing you are deficient. If you don't have experience doing grids you are deficient.

Not saying you need to build a series around it but IT ALL helps for "developing skill." Limiting your experience and self-censoring is always bad.

They'd normally do a whole bunch of thumbnails and small sketches first to get what they were looking for then use grids on the blow up to canvas.

The real point is that there are WAY too many people on /ic/ that lose their shit about people that utilize grids, when the reality is that using grids to get exact proportions on large pieces is PART of artistic production. It's one thing to tsk tsk people that use them as a crutch, but the problem is that so many people here straight up say you should NEVER use grids. Which is just self-defeating, bad advice.

You should understand le fundamentals, and then the next step in art education is kind of about then realizing that they're kind of just a goof. If your goal is to get exact proportions and framing as you envision it, whatever means you use justifies the end result.

It's like, what is your goal when you're producing a piece? Is it to circlejerk about how good you can freehand draw or are you trying to let the piece speak for itself?

I always point out artists like Mondrian (who rigidly measured out lines and boxes and is a great think piece on the whole "my kid could make that" meme, in which the response is "well they should have") and Warhol (who just hired weirdos to make prints of pictures). Or even people like Banksy who uses stencils etc etc.

It's about what the goal is. What the point of what you're doing is. If you're good enough at drawing accurate proportions and framing, people will think you're tracing or gridding anyway.
