Xmonad isn't a language and C isn't a window manager, so I can't answer that.

>>69943095
That's just a remnant of how shit C is since it doesn't have modules.

>>69943112
It's not about providing things by default, it's about being able to easily include additional functionality (your chosen arbitrary layout supporting hidden windows, say) not created by the developers in a way which isn't retarded (patches), i.e. by just writing source code in your main config file or even writing your own modules. It's much easier to create these modules, which are in a way equivalent to dwm patches in that they add arbitrarily complex functionality, but they virtually never break on xmonad updates and are always compatible with each other assuming the source code compiles.

>I was wondering if you could provide some examples of how you've utilized it in xmonad.
The config file is written in Haskell, so using xmonad would be an example of utilizing Haskell in xmonad. There are plenty of xmonad configs of varying complexity levels you can look up online.

I know that it doesn't come with a bar by default (although adding it is trivial, it's just a separate program), but how, specifically, do you think xmonad influenced dwm?
The latter came earlier, and the main layouts in xmonad clearly resemble dwm's. (I did toy around with it for a while, but I never used it seriously).
Anyway, I'm considering switching to it once I learn some more Haskell. dwm works and it works well, but the patching system is brain damaged and the community is stage 5 cancer.

They blame every problem their software has on something else.
st shits itself with images and they blame w3m, when it works fine in every other terminal emulator.
They are unironically going to drop Xft fonts since they are "a mess" when supporting them adds almost zero complexity from the application part (the actual rendering is handled by the respective libraries anyway).

Arbitrary access of internal WM state using your config file. So pretty much anything you can think of and write in a program. You can't do this in i3 since it uses a plaintext config where you can't really customize the internals of how i3 works.

I suppose that's true, in that you can't directly use the config file for that, but you can write scripts and execute them to achieve the same end.
I wonder if removing that level of abstraction is worth learning a new programming language.

>> No.69947248

>>69947047
I mean, you're directly writing Haskell code. There's not a more or less fixed structure like i3's config file.
You can configure your own layouts and easily swap them on the fly, for example. Multi monitor support is also miles better, and xmobar works like a charm with xmonad.

>>69947186
It's different. In i3 you usually write scripts to connect different modules and that's it. Overall, you're stuck with the available definitions. In xmonad you have way more freedom in this aspect.
You don't need to learn Haskell btw, at first I'd advise you to steal an xmonad.hs file and work from there. However, if you want to go balls deep into the rabbit hole I'd say you might wanna Learn You a Haskell for Great Good!

>> No.69947274

>>69947186
>but you can write scripts and execute them to achieve the same end
Write me a script to return the list of all active unfocused windows on a given workspace as an object which the i3 program itself can use.
>I wonder if removing that level of abstraction is worth learning a new programming language.
Depends on what you want. Any decent level of WM customization/extension can't really be done in plaintext configs. That's what programming languages are for. You don't need to learn C to get a basic st config going, same with xmonad. Just use other people's stuff and learn by example. It should be easy enough to figure out with basic lookup of how to do particular stuff you need in haskell.

I'm struggling to understand what exactly you mean by definitions.
>Multi monitor support is also miles better
now that sounds interesting.
it took ages to wrangle i3 into utilizing both monitors in a sane way, but that was mostly due to me not fully reading the the documentation.
dynamic workspace generation+multihead is not the greatest combination.
what makes xmonad better out of the box in this regard?
>Write me a script to return the list of all active unfocused windows on a given workspace as an object which the i3 program itself can use
I'm certain you can output that information easily, probably with i3-message, though I'd have to read up on how it can be used.

I don't really remember how xmonad comes out of the box. I'm pretty sure I had to steal and modify a config file to make it usable, though. So from someone going from i3 to xmonad, I don't think there're "sane" defaults. You'll have to struggle a little.

>> No.69947511

>By definition I mean extra layers of abstraction. You can't directly write code in i3's config file, right? You set values to pre-determined parameters.
so you're saying you can just rewrite how the WM works completely, all from xmonad's config file, right?
I can see why having that much control would be nice, though I can't think of any fundemental changes I would make.

>> No.69947522

>>69947368
>I'm struggling to understand what exactly you mean by definitions.
Say i3 defines a function/algorithm which determines in which order new windows get inserted onto the screen, e.g. you spawn two terminals and the one you spawned later gets tiled to the right and gets focus. You can't really change anything about this type of behavior from your config file. xmonad however has predefined functions in its libraries which allow you to specify such stuff either globally or on windows which match certain criteria you can define yourself arbitrarily, e.g. window title, it being on a chosen workspace, etc.

>what makes xmonad better out of the box in this regard?
It "just works". You have default support for easily switching around between your screens. You can even have different status bars on different screens with different workspaces.

>I'm certain you can output that information easily
Being able to output it and being able to process it easily with the functions already defined by i3 are different things. You have to be able to easily use the data in a way meaningful to i3 if you want to do any deeper customization.

I suppose if both terminals are identical in every way aside from when they were spawned, that's true, but you can use titles, classes, instances, names etc to tell i3 exactly where to put things.
being able to tell your WM to spawn things to the left on one workspace, and spawn to the right on another sounds kinda awesome though.
>It "just works". You have default support for easily switching around between your screens. You can even have different status bars on different screens with different workspaces
you can definitely do this in i3, though I've personally never done it.
