Repostan

Quick question, i'm moving from the uk to Canada next month (BC, Fraiser valley) and im looking for a suggestion as I have no idea about canadian networks.

I have an s7 currently and im looking to upgrade to something a bit newer ideally on contract. I havent really got a budget or network preference.

Seeing as everyone is talking about the redmi note 5 is it much of an upgrade compared to an s7? I can get one pretty cheaply in Bong bucks and pay as you go would work for me when im visiting the uk

I doubt even Xiaomi know wtf they are doing with their retarded naming system, so don't bother too much about understanding it yourself.
It used to be like this:
Mi = main line/premium phones
Redmi = budget phones
The mainline nowadays still follows the Mi designation, currently Mi8. But a shitloads of other models have it now as well. Mi Mix is a bezelless phone line with flagship specs, while the Mi Max, despite a one letter difference in name, is just a supersized Redmi Note. In the past two years shit went completely off the line. To illustrate: Recently Xiaomi released Mi A2, which is just Mi6X but with Android One instead of Xiaomi's MIUI, mind you this Mi6X has nothing to do with actual Mi6 flagship and likewise you have the smaller Mi A2 Lite, which is based on one of the Redmi phones.

I assume upgrading your phone means leasing the phone and they give you like $20 for returning your current one? No matter how rich you are, don't ever fall for this meme, you should always buy a phone pre-paid, the leased phone contracts fuck you with insanely costly monthly plans. It's not worth paying less upfront.

I can't recommend a phone because I don't know what you want in it. If you're making $50K+ a year I would get the iPhone X.

Otherwise, Pixel 2 has last-gen hardware it's relatively old right now and the camera improvement isn't worth it IMO. If you can find a good used one on swappa or some shit sure, but it's due for a price cut.

From the ananadtech review S9 has ~5 hours of screen on time., S9+ has much better battery. Galaxy s series is never a horrible buy, it's just whether or not you think the price is worth it over other phones.

>I assume upgrading your phone means leasing the phone and they give you like $20 for returning your current one?
I have an GS5 now with a dent. They might not even accept it as a trade-in which isn't a big deal. I've had it for a long time and it's lasted a long while.

>you should always buy a phone pre-paid, the leased phone contracts fuck you with insanely costly monthly plans. It's not worth paying less upfront.
The monthly payment for the phone comes out to the retail price, so there's no benefit to buy the phone up front as opposed to by the month?
>I don't know what you want in it.
Not exactly sure myself, probably longevity
>If you're making $50K+ a year
I make over 6 figures
> I would get the iPhone X.
I heard the X is going a bit downhill for Apple?
Maybe it's the wrong time to try Apple?
>S9+ has much better battery.
This goes to longevity, so that's a good thing I think

I wouldn't call it well optimized when an S7 Edge from 2016. and the Galaxy Note 4 from 2014. score higher. It's ironic smartphones are at a stage when a headphone jack is a plus, and not something that's expected.

You know what. I was thinking of getting the Redmi Note 5 but after spending some time thinking about how embarassing the camera is, and the fact that I spend about $200 on pre-paid credit a year anyway, I might as well just buy a better phone and the extra $100-300 will make it worth it in the end, considering I'll probably be using the phone for 3-4 year minimum (unless it breaks).

Something similar in size to an s7 but it can go larger. Feature wise I just want something thats a bit newer and runs better with a better battery. An ok camera would be nice as well. US. Ill probably use straight talk which is prepaid. this is what it says on the site

In order to connect to the Straight Talk 4G LTE network, your device must operate on Band II, IV or in certain areas, Band 12. For 3G or other 4G service, your device must operate on Band II (1900 MHz) or IV (1700/2100 MHz). GSM devices that do not support these bands may operate at 2G (EDGE) speeds.

Well, you do want the Global version then because it has band 4 LTE which is used by most US carriers. Even the Global version is missing some bands for US, no Band 12 for example. I'd check on cellmapper.net what bands are used in your area. Also I'd consider ordering the phone off Amazon, because at least then you have 30 days to return it if the coverage isn't satisfactory: https://www.amazon.com/Xiaomi-Redmi-Camera-Unlocked-Smartphone/dp/B07CZS8W5Y
