the realization that i dont play games for anything other than entertainment allowed me to switch to fulltime linux. windows is only necessary if you use videogames as a social catalyst, because linux can play all old games someway or another and you just cannot talk about it, but then you could argue that something like playstation 4 would be better for this purpose so i dont even understand. linux is definitely more enthusiast oriented

While a lot of the games I play happen to have Linux ports, lots of those games have issues that don't exist on Windows.

Hyper Light Drifter can only load sound files 127 times before hardlocking the entire computer.

Northgard's map generation is bugged as all fuck, frequently causing crashes. The likelihood of crashing increases exponentially the larger you make the map.

Civ 5's graphics load textures extremely slowly, meaning any significant scrolling will make the game look like an N64 game for five seconds.

X3's launcher is fucking stupid in Linux, it literally wants you to plug in a controller to get past it.

I mean, I can play, but fuck, half of the reason I keep loading Factorio is because it just works.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

when running discord desktop electron app I just straight up lost 20 fps in game. browser discord works fine, so I guess it's some electron rendering issue or it's because discord is bloat.

either manually or using Lutris (which is the modern PlayOnLinux replacement)
it doesn't come bundled with wine since it's not official wine software.
wine is working on their own wined3d11 solution but right now dxvk delivers better performance, which is why everyone is using it.
also make sure you have the most current graphics driver.
for nvidia that would be 396.24.02 (the .02 is important)

I would provide links but my ISP fucked up so I'm on mobile internet. I'm avoiding anything non text-based to not use up all of my monthly data

DXVK only changes how DX11 games are handled, so no.
If you get bad performance in DX9 and lower, there are 2 big other patches (that I know of).
If you use arch based, they are in AUR
First one is wine PBA, second one is wine gaming nine
PBA was made by some WoW nerd that found a bottleneck in the rendering (he has it explained on his homepage, but as I said, I avoid anything other than text boards)
Gaming Nine is a collection of gallium nine patches, so afaik dx9 patches

If you DON'T have performance troubles, stick to the regular wine or wine-staging repositories. Just make sure it's the latest version (3.12)

I am reading up on this slap fight, and am curious why anyone would fall for this middle school tier shit flinging by Stallman. Those who refer to Linux as gnu/Linux, I have a few questions

Why is gnu before Linux? Isn't Linux inherently more low level? This seems to intentionally make Linux look like an add on to gnu, or worse a gnu package outright.

What is an acceptable use case for gnu/Linux? For general systems that use the Linux kernel, it seems really dumb to assume that they use gnu userland, c libs, etc. So in that use case it's not appropriate. The next use case is distributions, and I feel like it is the distribution creator to decide that. For instance, Ubuntu isnt even called Linux at all, it's just "Ubuntu". Or is that terrible ethically?

This whole thing seems like a lame popularity contest from the fsf and an ugly one too. Apologies if I'm beating a dead horse here, but it just seems that this convention is obviously flawed.

My ex-gf got me back in sometime around Rumble's release because my IRL friends kept saying how they missed me and shit, so I played "with friends only" mainly so I could keep fucking this girl after coming over to play a few shitty twisted treelines with her and her brother. Then I quit again because it's pointless.

Programs / games are written as code which contains instructions such as "draw a red rectangle on the screen". This is then all compiled as files containing just 00111010101 which aren't practical to understand/edit.

Windows is very secretive about the 00101011 but linux source code is freely available. Most games are written in windows because there's pressure from Microsoft, and is the larger platform.

Making a game for windows needs you to add windows-only specific stuff to the game which can't be used by linux (both very hard to handle the 010101 and microsoft would sue anyway).

There are very successful efforts to make windows programs work on linux (see winehq.org). When a program tries to use a windows-specific component, wine circunvents this by translating the call to a linux component.

So if you try to draw a red rectangle using directx, it will instead do roughly the same thing with vulkan (which is open and better).
But it isn't perfect and applications glitch. Especially newer ones, since microsoft writes newer closed components which try to make this as hard as possible.

i wanted to play those but my intel card chokes on them, unfortunately. i only play games when i'm staying home sick from work and can't focus enough to work on a project.

dosbox is pretty awesome and there are tons of emulators, too. psx has a great collection of games. last week i played veil of darkness on dosbox. i killed the werewolf easily, but dracula curb-stomped me the second i walked into his throne room. 9/10 would play again.

Emulation is slow, which is why a wrapper like WINE is the main solution. WINE basically lets you play over 80% windows games, most without having to tweak anything.
You can run windows in a VM which is slower than emulation but ensures absolute compatibility. However, you can use a VM setup (GPU passthrough) to give the virtual machine your GPU, effectively getting to 90-95% actual performance without any input delay. But this is even more resource intensive.

>i wanted to play those but my intel card chokes on them, unfortunately.
It works on new intel GPU or AMD/Nvidia gaming GPU (I think the low end-midrange are okay). Also, it needs some single-core CPU performance.

Still, this should be mentioned in every thread. It's more or less the most well-developed and complex open sauce game. Definitely worth a try if you like RTS' and got a machine that can play it.

No, but why would you rewrite GTA III?
Why rewrite a dead game and risk being sued by Rockstar? I know they won't be able to do anything once they notice there's none of their code in it, but they'll try to delay its development once they notice.
But then again why rewrite GTA III at all? even if you feel like doing a rewrite of something for the lulz why not rewrite GTA SA which was far more popular and had a better modding scene.

>Why rewrite a dead game
"A dead game" is a strange notion. Regardless, you do it because you like the game and want to preserve it and enhance it.
>risk being sued by Rockstar
The risk is there with every open source engine rewrite.
>why not rewrite GTA SA which was far more popular and had a better modding scene
Because you are more likely to succeed if have milestones. You start out developing a GTA III engine, slowly upgrade it to a GTA VC engine and then to a GTA SA engine. There is a reason Rockstar didn't make something on the scale of SA first, either.

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

Well yeah because they go all out writing software for Windows and hand Linux crumbs to work with which is a shame because it forces you to use some bloated malware OS to get the best of what these companies have to offer.
It's an endless cycle of the best software being applied to a disgusting operating system.

/v/ tier rant incoming...
I really wish TF2 was supported by Valve enough to be a popular esports title. Even taking dumb shit like banana hats into account, it's a master class on game design. One look at the screen by someone who is only vaguely familiar with games and they can tell what team the players is on, who is winning, and who is currently attacking/defending. All the high movement abilities require a brain to pull off, and nothing is more satisfying than watching a soldier bomb a medic to change the time of the game. But no, we got stuck with memewatch and single button brainlet mechanics and fan service to lure idiots in.

That would be a good idea, but people who want this mostly just install wine regularly. Also, valve would have to manually support each game and a lot of games have their own tweaks. They could leave this to the community though.

This does not invalidate the contributions the GNU project and the FSF _have_ made over the past 3 1/2 decades.
>He's also tried to claim credit for the invention and preservation of "free software", which was the status quo before 1983
He didn't. What he did was be the first to formulate the idea of software freedom, as well as speak out against proprietary software.

They didn't. They're still developing SteamOS and still want to move to Linux as a platform just so they aren't constricted to (((Microsoft))). They just removed steam machines from the front page as none of those were from valve.
