Recommended modern models:

>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard), great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support

Just got a T420s as an upgrade from my T400. i5, 4GB ram, 128 GB SSD, 1600x900 screen. Nothing too fancy.
I was going to buy it for €90 which was reasonable enough, but the guy just gave it to me and refused to take my money. I had told him I was a student earlier, and he said I needed the money more then he did.
The screen does have some blemishes, and I had asked if it was in good condition and without scratches, so maybe that had something to do with it as well.

Where do I get my miku bios logo?

Is the processor replaceable? Damn I'm starting to like this thing...

Wouldn't it overheat tho? Any way to improve the temperatures? (I don't know if the T430 has bad temperatures, I've just had bad experiences with laptops and overheating)

>> No.62845332

Yes it is and replacing the stock dual core processors for quad cores is pretty popular among thinkfags.

No idea about the T430 though but they work fine on the T420 as long as you don't go full madman and use the latest quad cores or the 55W extreme processors.

I don't see any problem with that, I'm attracted to the style/features not the brand at the end of the day.

So many shills saying they're buying a retro to... idk convince lenovo there's a market? Like the t480 might have it for an option. More customers of something like x62 means a better done sequel.

What will Lenovo switch to after **90?

Got a really good condition t500 for $30 in the mail today. Slapped a loose 500gb hdd I had lying around in it. 1050p screen and snappy as hell. Can't get the brightness function keys to work in Winblows 10 though. Am I just retarded? Does Lenovo Service Bridge support it?

If the screen was changed then brightness may not work, because the lcd is not an approved part number. Often you have to flash the thing to an approved number to get brightness controls in windows. Ok, here I go...

1. The "normal laptop" or the Tablet version?
2. The X220/X220t or the X230/X230t?
3. Can you really see on the 12' screen from 12' or so?
4. Does it handle being thrown around well?
5. Does it feel comfy to use?

>got a job that's 20 miles away
>have to stay there for 2-3 days at a time
>need something to watch anime / read PDFs with
>tablets are overpriced and underpowered

>> No.62858701

>1. The "normal laptop" or the Tablet version?
I prefer the normal. The hinge feels nicer and I have no need of a 2" thick tablet, but maybe you do?
>2. The X220/X220t or the X230/X230t?
Depends on what you want to do. Main advantage of the **30 is that it more frequently comes with USB3 and is slightly newer generally. Main advantage of **20 is the old keyboard/trackpoint buttons and its less locked down (hackintosh, removing white list to get a better wifi card, etc).
>3. Can you really see on the 12' screen from 12' or so?
No, I don't think so. Its pretty much an average cheapo laptop screen from a few years ago. There's mods if youre handy.
>4. Does it handle being thrown around well?
Oh hell yes. iirc the **20's are slightly more hardy, but both are tough as fuck.
>5. Does it feel comfy to use?
Yes. I was meme'd into this shit, but now collect.
>So I thought I should look into thinkpads.
Or do I need to reconsider the tablets again?
Doesn't sound like you'd really need a powerful tablet for that use case?

Honestly, if I were you I'd get whatever laptop you want and then either a kindle fire ($50 - fine for reading) or an old ipad/nexus 7/etc (under $100 likely)

Possible in theory maybe. No one can even figure out how to get something like libreboot to run on it. It's unlikely some random hacker figured it out and is using it to steal your dick pics.

How would that even work? I mean even if you hacked a bios and got it running your own malicious code. You'd need to include the right filesystem code and drivers and it's own mini OS, and I don't think you can fit that much on the limited BIOS. If I understand correctly, computrace actually just inserts itself into windows and piggybacks off of it.

I agree that it's a stretch. But just to be sure should I follow these steps I found elsewhere:

1) Overwrite the disk with zeros and format on a separate machine.

2) Reflash the bios via CD written on a separate machine.

3) Install Linux downloaded and written on a separate machine.

Would that be enough?

How about the following steps:
1. Consult a psychologist and tell them you're exhibiting early sign of schizophrenia
2. Take the medicine they give you

just install windows, reflash the bios with the latest original one while adding a cute anime logo then nuke windows and install lunix

Flash the BIOS and the mobo firmware and you should be safe.

I have a question about the P51 and can't find the answer anywhere: is the touch screen 1080p display variation a glossy or matte screen?

>> No.62860249

look for a review, you´ll be lucky if someone here owns a P51

>> No.62860288

Why? Is the P51 considered bad / unpopular?

I should probably redo the thermal paste on my new (free) t420s. Hitting 97 degrees just installing winblows updates. Toasty.

>> No.62860320

Is very expensive, i would recommend it only if you work on tight deadlines, even then the P50 on outlets is a lot cheaper.
