Post your component list, rate other anons', ask questions in general.

Always state the purpose of your PC, your budget, AND YOUR COUNTRY if outside the USA.
If you are asking for improvements, clarify whether you want to lower price, or improve specs or build quality.

>Assemble your parts list with price comparisons by vendor and compatibility filter.

>Have a budget, but don't know where to start? This will recommend you a parts list based on price.

>General build advice including chipset compatibility, power supply advice, Windows activation information.

>Information about how to assemble a PC, how to select components, etc.

>Consider a G4560 instead of i3; similar performance, up to 50% cost reduction.
>Consider using an i5 6500/7500 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build.
>Consider stock fan+heatsink for any locked CPU build without a Z mobo.
>Add a SSD even for budget builds, it's easier to add HDD later than replacing OS drive.
>The only worthwhile gfx cards are the GTX1050Ti, RX470, GTX1060 6GB, RX480.

If you see any other build advice or part list threads, direct them here with >>>/g/pcbg

I plan to build this as my replacement server at some point in the future (current server shows no signs of dying/storage still has free space)
My current server is an old Opteron 170/4GB Ram/10TB Storage box running Windows Home Server 2011. Been great for a long time but the hardware is starting to show it's age. plus the drives have all gotten past the 2+ yr service mark. (I've got backups, but still)
I plan to keep the WHS 2011 OS cause it just works, does all I need without fail.

CPU: FX 8300
HDD: 1TB (OS/Client Backup drive), 4TB x 4 Raid 5 (Storage) May go with 6TB x 4 Raid 10 depending on drive cost

Will an older PSU with only a 20 pin motherboard connector work with a newer motherboard that uses a 24 pin connector? The PSU is an Antec 480w and it's about 10 years old. The motherboard is some Acer Intel board and it's just a couple years old.

Dude, I'm considering buying a 1080ti and a 7700. There is not much "better" than I can go with that supposedly saved money as far as I know. I'm clearly not doing a budget build.

Just from a casual glance, the g4560 scores significantly lower in benchmarks than the 7700 and there have been several games this year that perform much better the more cores you add into the equation.

Hey pcb/g/, first time poster here, long time visitor.
I want to build a new computer and save some money using some old parts. I keep checking logicalincrements but I just can't make up my mind, maybe you can help me?
My budget is $1000 +/- 200, either to save for better deals later, or if some really sweet parts take me over 1k today.
I currently have a 1TB HDD, no SSD and no M.2.
I have a 550 watt PSU I may or may not want to carry over to my next build (it's old and is missing some connections, like an 8 pin molex, but I am combining 2 6s for my GPU).
My GPU is a EVGA GTX 950 FTW, got it for $130, bran new and it's on Amazon now for $209, a good deal, I think.
The rest of my parts cannot be carried over except my monitors and maybe my mouse and kb, but I really want to replace them if I'm getting a new system.
I really want to get a good Mobo that I can put maybe a better CPU on overtime, one that I can put maybe 16 GB of RAM on now and go up to 32 or 64 later.
Seems like a socket LGA 1151 may be the way to go now, but will it get much better than the i7 7700 or should I consider an AM4 board and get maybe an R7 1700 for now?
I just want a board I can get a GTX 1080 Ti on and potentially a top of the line CPU at some point in the future. For now I can stick with my GTX 950, 1 TB HDD and 550W PSU (maybe), I just need a new case, motherboard, CPU and I'd like to have something left over for a decent keyboard and mouse. 1k to spend and I'd like to get it together in the next week.

I have a crippling addiction to Overwatch and my once stellar scholastic performance is taking a sharp nose dive. At the last place I lived I could prevent myself from playing these games (for 5 or 6 hours) by uninstalling them (I would only download at like 2 or 300 kbps) but the new apartment I'm living in has internet that will download OW in like 10 minutes.

I've decided that getting rid of my GTX 950 and replacing it with a graphics card that cannot run OW or WoW at a playable frame rate is something I need to do. Does anyone have an recommendations on graphics cards that wouldn't make my entire computer run like a POS but definitely wouldn't play OW or, less importantly, WoW? I've looked at workstation graphics cards but I really don't know much about them. Any advice would be awesome.

I need a graphics card that wouldn't run any reasonably new FPS games but wouldn't cause my computer to run like complete shit.

No, the i5s are all garbage. All of them.

Just get a G4560, a locked 7700 (dont need expensive cooler or mobo for them), or wait for Ryzen 5.

If that's your budget, Ryzen 5 costs about the same as a i5-7400 but is faster than a 7600k. A locked 7700 isn't much more (you can find them for under $260) and is going to be much much faster than the 7400.

4 threads is not enough when you're spending over $600 on a build.

I'm sorry some morons on /g/ convinced you that an i5 4c/4t was good enough. You should have gotten a locked 7700 at least, which is about $300 cheaper total than a 7700k, for better performance in newer games like that than the more expensive 7600k.

I've been here a few days trying to help people, but it's become exhausting with all the i5 builds people post and recommend.

Like >>59680457 >>59680542 said, since you got it 2 weeks ago you should just return it.
You can build a good locked 7700 build for cheap that'll be better, or wait for the 1600X.

>> No.59682726

For $1200 you can get a locked 7700, 500GB-1TB SSD, and 1080. That's a pretty good build for that price.

For $800, best would probably be a R5 1500X or 1600X with either a 1070 or 1080 (or wait for Vega)

For $700+, not worth it considering you can get a 1080 for $420 or less. Not worth giving up a decent SSD and other shit given your budget. You'd need to be talking more $1500+.

>will it get much better than the i7 7700
Will it get better how?
This is the last line of Z270.
Coffeelake is going to need a new chipset, which means a new motherboard. I highly doubt you'll be able to flash BIOS for a Coffeelake CPU to work even if it is still the LGA1151 socket. It's not going to be "Z370", it's something significantly different this time around.

If you want more future proof, go AM4.

Cooler is ass. You can get a better air cooler for cheaper. You need to spend more around $150 for an AIO that outperforms Noctua.

But considering you're getting this for video editing and rendering, a 1600X or 1700 would probably be better for you.

You can get the ROG Strix 8GB RX480 for $150.
It's on Newegg for $200 now. Use ebates and buy newegg giftcards off groupon and it becomes $150.

Or, to any affect, buy the newegg giftcards now, and if you see one even cheaper under $200 that you want you can still use those to knock another $40-$50 off.

But yes, your X4 will bottleneck. It's still better than using ryzen with a GT 640, though. Just upgrade your other stuff later.

i5s stopped being worth getting since Haswell as half the games coming out then, fucking years ago, were showing massive performance improvements with hyperthreading.
The only time you don't see a massive performance benefit from HT in 9/10 AAA games now days is because they're GPU bottlenecked not to show it to scam people into buying i5s.

The i5-7600k should cost like $125, and even then it'd hardly be worth it. If an i3-7350k was more like $90, it'd be pretty worth it.

You'll have to turn down texture sizes in some cases to not use too much VRAM, essentially that's the difference.

I'm just saying a 470 would have been cheaper and 95% the same. While an 8GB can sometimes be double the performance at maxed settings over the 4GB.

Not a huge deal. You'll probably still be able to resell it for like $100-$125 when Vega comes.

Poorfag here. Not him but down the line, when the Vega causes the 470 and 480 to price drop, would getting a 480 8GB be viable over a 470 4GB? Whichever I get I am going to have for years to come (the last time I bought a GPU was in 2012). It seems like the 480 is more future-proof

I mean you could already get an RX470 for $120 on newegg 2 days ago, and use ebates+groupon to bring that down to about $90.

That's really cheap. That's better than 970 performance from a year ago for $90.

Even with RX500 coming, I don't see RX470s dropping much lower than that $120 that you can hoops down to 90. I have seen them as cheap as 110, but not with extra hoops to bring it down further.

RX500 is just a rebrand (might be on different process and lower power? But only 8% higher perf). When 390X came out, 290X prices did not drop much.

The 8GB RX480 is definitely more future proof, as already pointed out. I just don't think you're going to be getting them or RX580 8GBs for much cheaper than $150 any time soon.

The pricing of 1060s isn't exactly putting pressure on AMD to put 8GB RX580s at anything less than like the same $200-$250.

Buy a refurbished A12-9800 non-pro PC. You can get that for $350.
It will play roughly the same number of games that a G4560+1050 will.

I mean sure, if you can find a 3770 PC with a 380X or 780 in it on craigslist for $350, that's a bit better. Just a bit graphics wise, but definitely a better CPU.

But with that, you can swap in a B350 motherboard later on, and overclock it to 4.5ghz+.
Then later on you have a good B350 AM4 motherboard for a great upgrade path once your overclocking isn't enough and you have more money. The 3770 with its DDR3 and ancient socket has no upgrade path.
Not to mention it has USB 3.1, PCIe3.0, M.2, and all that modern stuff that a 3+ year old craigslist PC won't have.

I mean I don't know why I'm bothering giving you an intelligent response when you're spouting bullshit in response to the best advice someone can get when they only have $500 for monitor+mouse+keyboard+pc, but there you go.

It's just a high clocking excavator 2c/4t chip. At 4.5 GHz on air it's still just throwing IPC somewhere slightly north of piledriver (not great by today's standards). Not impressive.

When I suggested a DDR3/i5 setup it wasn't with the idea of carrying over any of those parts to a new setup years down the road or with the idea that he'd be able to track down a 3770/4770 at a reasonable price now or in a few years. It's just to get him a decent PC right now. A cheap, "ancient" 4670 refurb would absolutely destroy this A12-9800. So would a 3770 with it's ancient RAM, as if that matters when it's up against a dogshit 28nm APU.
Hell, so would this if you throw in a $100 GPU and the base system costs the same as what you suggested:

Your idea of getting an AM4 APU that can be then used to transition into a B350 mobo and then into a Ryzen chip is idiotic. You also failed to address how many of these OEM cases do not adhere to ATX standards. Unless you know for a fact that's an ATX case, never recommend changing the mobo on an HP/Dell PC. Get good.

From the OP:
>Consider using an i5 6500/7500 in any RX470/480 or GTX 1060 tier build.
Any particular reason for this? I recently got the RX470 and new 16gb DDR3 ram but was thinking of getting new mobo/CPU as I'm still getting lag in some games and those components are older than the rest. I was going to get an i7 (gaming/3D modelling). Bit clueless on mobo and cpu choices.
Speccy pic is current build.

>> No.59684555

There is no reason.

OP is just retarded. You should never consider an i5. Ever. You never should have considered one in the past 2 years.

You are correct in that 4c/4t is lagging behind heavily in games now days and is completely unjustifiable paying $200 for anymore.
I also have a 2500k. a 7500 is pretty much no better than it and shouldn't be recommended. Literally 6 year old performance.

>> No.59684591

Well I did make this pc 4-5 years ago so it does make sense for those parts to be shit. Do you have any recommendations for cpu/mobo then, or should I just go back to wading through the hundreds of highest rated on pcpartpicker?

>> No.59684890

The i5 range (particularly the K models) have generally been the sweetspot for price vs performance when buildinmg a dedicated gaming PC for the last few years. You could still make a case for the octocore vishera chips but that bascially required overclocking and there are otherr platform nuances to be aware of. However the writing has been on the wall for a while that i5s are not going to be only slightly behind i7s while being considerably chiper - the i7 lead has been growing (often substantially). Now where the real shakeup comes is ryzen - the commanding price lead the i7s have over i7 has effectively been annihilated by ryzen which brings similar IPC and extra cores (and cores/threads is where the i7 gets its lead) to lower price points across the board.

In the here and now buying an i5 is extremely stupid with the ryzen 5 chips on the horizon. The 6c/12 ryzen chip will be THE gaming chip to get and is likely to remain so for quite a while.

By extension a combination of ryzen and the G450 has rendered the entire i3 lineup utterly pointless because nobody cares about AVX2 at this price level.

>> No.59684928

What is your budget?
You can obviously keep the RX 470.

Most on pcpartpicker suck ass, too. Tons of people using those shit h100i and 212evo coolers. You know people are clueless when they go with those.

That's my general "high end but huge performance/$" suggestion.
It's about $250 cheaper than a 7700k build, but 100% the same performance when you're GPU bottlenecked, which is most cases, and still better performance on average than a 5Ghz overclocked 7600k otherwise.

But you can also replace the locked 7700 with a 1500X or 1600X. The 1600X should potentially be better on some games, especially as games are better optimized for Ryzen, or with faster memory.

If you keep your RX470, then looking at about $500-$850 for a Ryzen5 or locked i7 build.

>7600k sweetspot for price vs performance
This is objectively wrong and has been objectively wrong for more than the past 2 years.

>n the here and now buying an i5 is extremely stupid with the ryzen 5 chips on the horizon.
It has always been stupid for the past few years. You've just been lied to and believed the lies before this overwhelming evidence with Ryzen 5 came around.

For Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge, it was true that hardly any games used HT. Some games even performed WORSE with it.
Now days, for the past few years, games and applications both almost never perform worse with it, and the vast majority of games get improvements from it, sometimes 50%+ 1% minimum FPS difference just from HT on vs off.

I meant to write.

Anyway, locked 6700/7700 often go on sale for the cost of a 7600k.

A 7700 is objectively better on average whether it's applications or games than a 5Ghz overclocked 7600k. Overclocking a 7600k to 5Ghz, or 4.8Ghz for that matter, costs way more than a locked 7700 does.

But yeah, it's true that i3s and i5s sort of had a place before 2c/4t pentiums came around.

A 7600k+mobo+cooler costs 4x more than a g4560+mobo and is only about 50% better on average. 75% better in the best case. Not worth it at all. That's the worst performance/$ you can get.

A locked i5-7500 is hardly better. You still pay twice as much, this time just for about 25-35% better performance.

But yeah, in most games you hardly see a difference between the 2c/4t 7350K and the 4c/4t 7600k. But... that doesn't make the 7350K bad, that is just another indicator of how awful the 7600k is for what it costs.

If you have to worry about the power consumption between 2 cpus, you have way bigger issues...

>> No.59686162

Okay, I guess.

So you sort of have that good strategy which is to buy one thing that will hopefully last 4-6 years, and another that you'll probably be replacing in 2-3, but you have it in reverse.

You should probably be getting a cheaper CPU, like the 1500X, and a high end GPU like the 1080 (you can find them almost as cheap as $400 if you wait for 1 day sales to pop up) or waiting for Vega.

That way later you can upgrade to a better CPU but your GPU should still play games fine years from now.

The 7700 and 7700k aren't as good as they seem. The 7700k overclocked to 5Ghz can't even maintain 144fps minimum in BF1 multiplayer, a HIGHLY highly optimized game. >>59682504
And the 7700k has no upgrade path. It's the best CPU there'll ever be for that chipset/socket.

On the other hand, a Zen2 or Zen3 6 or 8 core that you can upgrade to later when you have AM4 is going to have waaay more power for games to optimize for for that magical 144fps minimum.

Also consider how the SSD/HDD are the things you're going to have the longest without upgrading. If you want to go from a HDD to an SSD you have to reinstall OS and transfer shit over.

It's pretty much worth upgrading for anyone on 4c/4t.
If you had a 3770 or 4790, I'd have said "no".

Your GPU is also quite good, so you can stick with that and just downscale to 1080p in games that allow it, but I'd upgrade to the 1600X in your position.
I have a 2500k, which isn't that far behind, and that's what I'm upgrading to.

But if you have plenty of money and want to upgrade everything except maybe your PSU, you could get a 1080 if you find one around $400 or Vega that's coming in like 4-7 weeks.

If you do want to overclock (and get good overclocks at that) prepare your angus because you need a good cooler (remember the 7700k doesn't ship with ANY cooler) and a decent board ontop of the price premium the 7700k commands over its non-K brethren.

ASRock Pro4 is probably what I'm going to get.

I might see if someone ends up doing a motherboard roundup and seeing if there are performance differences between them.

The 1500X is better than the 7600k.
Sure, it won't beat the 7700k, but it's only $190, comes with cooler, motherboards cost $50 less, etc.

That saves you a TON of money so you can spend $400-$600 on a good GPU instead and just upgrade the CPU in 2 years.

No, I was objectively correct.

Yeah, with day1 BIOS, 2133mhz RAM while the i5 has 3200mhz, and other bullshit going on in the so-called "testing methodology"

Go look at X99 day1 benchmarks. Oh wait, you can't, all the boards fried.

Only when you use a fucktarded methodology like taking the result and dividing it by the number of threads, which isn't how you test single thread performance, you stupid fucking ape.

In a proper test that literally only tests on a single core, the results are within MoA between them.

This (as well as the adoredTV vid) does pose some interesting questions in the relationship between Nvidia's drivers and the cpus that feed them. Clearly Nvidia suck balls at DX12, but the bigger question is why is this so apparant on ryzen?

>> No.59687058

Because the driver is multithreaded and is managing threads super poorly on Ryzen, I'm almost certain.

If you "disable multithread optimization" in Nvidia drivers, it drastically improves Ryzen performance. (>15% in many cases)
It should drastically improve it further still if it actually optimized correctly on top of that.

Most on /g/ are too stupid too understand how much simple variations can drastically change results so they'll cling to day1 benchmarks with shit methodologies.
They'll defend that you shouldn't have to mess with any settings, but say that results where 7700k or 7600k settings aren't optimal and make it perform worse are invalid.

Looks fine, but honestly why not just get a 500GB SDD? It's worth it imo.

You could also get Windows 10 for ~$20 off Kinguin.

>If you "disable multithread optimization" in Nvidia drivers, it drastically improves Ryzen performance. (>15% in many cases)

Now assuming this is an option exposed to end users (be it through geforce experience or other such software - I haven't had an Nvidia card for a long time) do you have any hard evidence to verify this statement? It sounds plausible but that is no substitute for actual testing.

>> No.59687338

It's in the Nvidia control panel, yes.

I think the source was Anandtech forums. I can't find it now.

Because we're on the cusp of finally getting a jump in performance after things were stagnant for 6 years.

A 1600X is fine too now, but it's more money in 2 years it'll be on at least 10% higher clocks and some other improvements.

And you wouldn't HAVE to upgrade, but we're hitting the limits of 4c/8t in games now days.

Doesn't make sense to buy a 4c/8t that has no upgrade path, even when it's a stronger one, when Intel is switching to 6c mainstream next year and i3s will be 4 core minimum.

In games, the 1600X is pretty much going to be the sweet spot at the moment. But it doesn't come with a cooler so ends up being more like $100 more than the 1500X.

If you go to "Specifications" you can see the difference. Why is that so complicated? Why do you expect that you could know everything about them from the name and model number alone?

Does "Ford Focus WPOPXD" or whatever say how large it is, how many seats it has, its cargo capacity, its horsepower, anything? No.

So I was looking at getting another hard drive, my 1tb is filling up fast. I looked at the mobo and it seems that there are Sata ports without the connector, does the controller (I think that's the part) need to be soldered on? Or is there a clip connector thing I can use so I can attach a Sata hard drive to the empty port. If all else fails my graphics card is covering up too Sata ports I could use, but that'd be a bitch to try to access without unplugging my graphics card

>> No.59687547

>1700 is IDENTICAL to the 1700X.
No, it's not. The 1700X is about 3.5% lower voltage for a given clock on average, and the 1800X about 7%.

Don't bother replying, because I won't argue with you. Accept the fact, or continue being ignorant.

That SanDisk is no faster than a SATA drive.
If you want actual decent NVMe speeds, go with the MyDigitalSSD BPX 480GB. It's $220 but fast.
If you are fine with standard SATA SSD speeds, you can get a 525GB MX300 for $140.

You might be able to get the ASRock Pro4 for cheaper. At least, it's significantly cheaper in the US right now.

GPU also seems expensive for an RX470 4GB, can you not find a better sale?

Looks good otherwise.

>> No.59687652

the difference between the 1700 and 1700X is 16mV for a given clock past nominal voltage curve. That's 1.1% you retard. 1800X is 2.3% more efficient for a given clock past nominal voltage curve.

Math is hard though, better start repeating outdated numbers from sources that have been updated since then.

You can find 1070s for around $325, but a R9 Fury will give you 80-95% the performance for $235 or less.
