Intel doesn't like dropping prices.

They'll just invest billions into marketing and bribes.

They can't offer the i5-7600k at $175 or the i7-7700k at $225 which would be rather competitive prices because they cost more to make. They have an iGPU and are a significantly larger die.

Intel will have to modify their chip layout and release a new socket to truly compete.
They could already have designs they didn't bother making because they were ripping people off so good already, though. That might be why they're rushing Coffee Lake ahead early, to bring new SKUs to market.

>>59013167
TDP != wattage.
It's just a blanket rating for the minimum cooler size needed.
i7-6700k is like a 91W TDP rating but it instead draws around 110watts at load. Will have to wait for real tests and benchmarks to see Ryzen's true performance/watt.

The thing is, I don't think this same strategy would work again these days.

People don't care so much about "intel inside". The big thing most of them look for is battery life.
Raven Ridge is going to destroy Intel in battery life. An OEM taking a 30% kickback bribe for not using any AMD products at all is going to lose to another OEM whose laptop will play netflix for 15 hours on a battery instead of 12.

>good multi threaded performance
>bad single threaded performance

If those rumors about them going after the gaming market is true then they are damn stupid. Their CPU's will be worse than Intel because of that single threaded performance especially with Intel on full panic mode and about to release the 7640k and 7740k with insanely high oc and unmatchable single threaded performance.

I remember them doing the same with the fx line if cpu by bundling in games to appeal to gamers but everyone knew they were shit for games. Why can't they just be normal and market it to the people who will actually buy this stuff because they require the good multi threaded performance e.g. video producers, animators etc. That's still a massive market.

Goddamn amd can't do anything right.

Depends on what board you get. Some Biostar boards are bad, others are good (I know there was an LGA 775 board they made that was the best for C2D overclocking), most are fairly meh. Have a Biostar board right now, and aside from some quirks it works.

Bad single core performance isn't that much of a problem. The Ryzen CPUs have enough performance on single core for about 120 FPS in most games, easy, if the graphics card can handle it. Even my CPU manages like 70-80 FPS in GTAV and my single core performance is comparable to AMD FX crap.

At a point where you're dealing with i7 6950K level of single core performance, which is pretty bad mind you, you're high enough that even if a 6700K or 7700K or whatever CPU you got on the low end platform, it won't make enough difference to matter.

The only way single core performance is gonna hold you back is if you have extremely low performance.. like me.

Can't wait to see what the highest end model brings to the table.
I think we're going to see a wave of people finally upgrading their 2500k and 2600k, since this is pretty much the first upgrade that makes sense price and performance wise.

What comes after this, that's what interests me the most.
Single core performance has stagnated like crazy and I don't think we're going to see anything dramatic going on there.
I think this is about the last CPU generations that people are going to upgrade to.
Just think how long your previous CPU lasted, if you now upgrade to Ryzen, you're looking at least a decade of use out of it.
Unless we're going to return to the insane performance increase curve that we saw 10 years ago, there's no reason for anyone to upgrade after this and the desktop CPU market is going to dry up before 2020.
New materials for CPUs can't become reality fast enough. Silicon is fucking dead.
Hope this lights a fire under Intel's asses and forces them to finally go and push the new tech or materials to production.
After all there's no way in hell they can compete with this price to performance ratio in any way imaginable.

there is a performance parity point.

Not many people play games at 120fps+
not many people have 400$+ gpus
not many people even have i7's
even fewer people overclock even if they have an overclockable cpu.

If zen is even just to sandybridge, the single core is good enough, but no, it looks to be at least broadwell.

most people will never run into issues with this cpu, but most people will benefit from the headroom a 6 or 8 core brings, and at worst, will have i7 like performance for less then 200$ new., and that is key, new.

Old motherboards are getting to the point caps are going to be dieing of age, if they were even of quality to begin with, this makes the used market appealing unless you get a hell of a deal, and with intel parts, you aren't.

hate to break it to you, I really do, but a core 2 duo first run is enough for normal computer use.

I KNOW, really sucks, but its true. I have more then 10 tabs open, that already puts me outside of normal peoples computer use by a WIDE margin.

This is why the desktop is 'dying' no one needs a new more powerful one and even walmart shit boxes are overkill for what people use them for.

You want to market 'hey this cpu is a great facebook cpu' then you slit your fucking wrists right there because enve arm can do that.

No what you do is you take the most common demanding thing a normal person would do, play a videogame, and show them how its fantastic for that purpose. Has there ever been a cpu that was amazing for games, but shit for literally everything else?

The people who use workstations generally do not build the computer

Servers are going to use whatever is best, not what marketing tells them to

But normal consumers, a segment of the market that amd literally wrote off as non growth for zen, you market to them with games.

So long as intel isn't fucking you through oems, a good cpu will find its way everywhere, but people who game, a good number also build computers.

a good number do, even if they multi thread, they hammer the absolute fuck out of one more then the others, actual good threading is never going to happen outside of outliers even when vulcan and 12 take off.

That said, ryzen looks to be good enough single thread, and pair it with the auto overclock (still stock), will kick the shit out of any stock intel.

he designed zen, and left them a road map through zen + and given amd from bulldozer to excavator was improving ipc by margins of 15%+ in some iterations, not intels but real ipc, even without him, a good base cpu at amd can be taken far.

>> No.59023350

amd has a fuck load of thermals sensors on the chip, along with voltage regulators, Its likely, and this is conjecture, That amd can look at per core speed/temp and tweak on the fly, along with seeing if some part of the cpu needs more voltage or less to push it just that bit further.

All of which is likely hard coded into the cpu for peak limits of xfr, manually over rideable, or possibly a function of the bios reading the cpu. the tdp will likely be given to the cpu from bios for what the motherboard can handle at its peak without risking the motherboard.

That way the cpu knows the limits of the cpu, and the limits of the motherboard, and its never pushed farther then what could be claimed for warranty.

seeing as next to no one overclocks, and ryzen is basically equal ipc to kabby, and canrad got their cpu to 5ghz on a single core without even pushing anything (validation board could not handle a full cpu overclock) its likely stock 1X00x cpus will kick the shit out of any intel in that price range and will show it in benchmarks even on a stock cooler as the wrath is about on par with a 212.

Not to mention 4k vr, which will demand more of the gpu then cpu.

90hz is the requirement for vr, or at least what is recommended for vr, and a quad core is pushing almost anything coded half way decent to 90.

If intel brought out a 6 core at i7 prices, would programs suddenly bloat to require that?

for games you have a good argument to make that they would have utilized more cores sooner then they have, but still, require more cores is the key.

Intel has been getting around this problem for YEARS. It's called marketing. Those same people you claim don't need new CPUs are quite often dumb enough to fall for Intels "your computer is 2 years old!? Upgrade goy!"

You are right though, the desktop market is overstated thanks to Intel, and the company would be crippled and forced to have major layoffs if the desktop CPU market bubble popped and adjusted to the average consumers NEEDS. But The CPU desktop market would really need to suffer in order for AMD to be hurting, since they've trimmed the fat (See: feminist frequensee and other retarded shit). AMD, for the most part, only stands to gain from this.

Intels marketing will actually marginally benefit AMD and will greatly benefit them if they run a counter Ad-campaign to tote themselves as a competitor and better choice.

Its not that intel was holding us back. they were holding back and that's not deniable, but holding us back... no.

You either have to lack a chromosome or do it for free.

None of the 2011-X chips I know about feature an iGPU, and even if they do, many boards do not possess any ports for that anyway. You will be in the very same situation.

And for that, any shitty video card for 20$ will suffice for a decent video output and acceleration. If you game, do other workloads requiring muh Terafloppies and/or need 200 video outputs at 3840X2160, there will be a dedicated GPU anyway.

Pic related even features a B350 board from MSI at 79$.

We're now about 70$ from the cheapest X99 one available, an ASRock X99 Extreme3 for currently 151.98$ AFTER a promo on a specific retailer.

Not to mention that B350 isn't even going to be AMD's low-end platform.

Normalfags are retarded enough to believe this argument because they don't care/know about overclocking and all they see is m-muh jigahertz. All normalfags see is a slightly higher single core score and that settles it for them, but they ignore the fact 6 core and 8 core ryzen chips compete with i7 6800k, 6850k and 6900k which also have "lower" single core scores (1700-1900) purely because they run at a lower base clock.

Man, imagine how fucking good it must feel to be an oldfag AMD employee. You were there in the glory days of Athlon XP, etc., you then watched Intel cheat, lie, and bribe while at the same time wrecking your shit in chip advances. You watched the company collapse into near irrelevance after some misfires, and your job with them became a source of derision and jokes. "Might not want to put that you worked at AMD on your resume, lol"

But there was a sliver of hope that someday, it could be turned around. You heard the news that the legend himself was brought in to help with the new chip designs.

Did he still have it in him? Had his glory days passed?

Years passed, and the rumors of the beast that was forming solidified. You saw the benchmarks, you knew the price point AMD was going to hit, and you knew that the smug fuckers at Intel who had been rolling over you with generations of minor upgrades were finally going to get their shit wrecked.
