Gonna continue this thread.

Is it worth going back to Windows 7?
Currently rocking 10 like 90% of /g/ but there are certain things that are stupid.

What are some reasons to go back to Windows 7?

>> No.56056567

Yea man, something else that I liked about 7 was just how simple and clean it is.
Honestly I feel like Windows 10 seems a little bloated at times when going through the menus for example. I hate all the metro and ads and telementry spywate as well.

>> No.56056580

It's funny

It's not bad actually, not the biggest fan of the UI though.

>> No.56056605

10 is just 7 with more bloat, ads, bugs, forced DWM, telemetry and DX12.

If you don't care about DX12 (it's still irrelevant right now) then you have no reason whatsoever to use 10.
Wait another year and then things might be different and 10 might actually be less shit then too.

8.1 is a legit option as well, in fact if you don't mind having DWM always on it's probably a better choice than 7 at this point.

>> No.56056631

I hate DX12, and I actually like Vulkan better because it supports more platforms, which is better for all of us.

Fuck, do you think Forza Horizon 3, and other games published by Microsoft will be playable on Windows 7? Because I was actually looking foward to the titles.

Sorry to sound like a noob but what is DWM, can't remember.

>Sorry to sound like a noob but what is DWM, can't remember.
Desktop composition aka Aero aka GPU accelerated UI.
For most uses you might as well leave it on, but in some cases you get better performance if you disable it and it lets you play games in windowed mode without vsync.

i didn't like 10 because:
>control panel half-assedly split into two
>can't disable windows defender (along with updates and apparently dwm?)

windows 7 is old as hell, and not that great to use on your primary machine nowadays.
the only downside to windows 10 is the forced updating, but you should be updating anyways.
also why does a gif about windows 10 use the windows 8 colors? windows 10 is just static blue, while 8 cycled through all the pretty colors.
the only downsides was that you had to learn keyboard shortcuts to make using the ui nice
but after that windows 8.1 was great, I'd use it over windows 7 99/100 times.

This. It comes completely empty and free of bloat when installed, and you can easily set up all programs you need in less than half an hour from scratch. That's what I love about win7, it can satisfy your every need. Windows 10 is a bloated cloud machine, I found it more difficult to use 10 after 7 than I did a Linux distro. Windows 10 took away everything that was good on 7. Windows 7 was a personal OS, while 10 seems more like a public forced mutation.

>> No.56066152

I'm sick and tired of this "cloud" and "connected" bullshit. If I wanted cloud capabilities in my device I'd install it on my own. If I wanted my OS to make unsolicited connections to the internet I'd install a few trojans and botnet clients. What Windows 10 does is force it upon you and downplay locally-stored files as well as personalization. Also forced ads and fucking Candy Crush preinstalled, as well as the removal of the ability to disable all that shit in the Pro version.

For the paranoid here's a powershell command which should check for everything that was released as telemetry crap. Again, this should not bother you if you're doing a clean install right now, and the updates in the picture attatched is all you need to block.

I don't plan on using Win10 and I'm still on Win7. I did try Win10 during Insider Preview and I have one machine left with Win10 in the house that I plan to revert back to Win7. I had a similar problem back when Vista and Win7 were becoming the thing. XP64 loaded faster than either of them but XP64 lacked drivers. Win7 reached SP1 and I switched again due to drivers. Nothing of value has been gained except driver compatibility. Win8 and Win10 are even worse than Vista so there really is no point. I can toss bblean or litestep on Win7 if I need it to look pretty. I doubt any game that supports DX12 won't do DX11 or perhaps Vulkan so everything is fine.

If by some chance I'm forced to use Win10 for gayming then I'm more likely to just switch to Linux (Manjaro likely with Cinnabuns) and use passthrough. I've already killed off MS Office in the various workplaces I help as well as home. Last step I guess???

No os but came with driver disc?

>> No.56080777

I know, weird but true.

According to the description on it the drivers should work on win 7/8

>> No.56080854

You could easily get the drivers on it if you cared.
But anyway, at least get 8.1 on that thing if you don't want 7 for whatever reason.
The only advantage of 10 over 8.1 is DX12 and you have a laptop so you won't play new games anyway.

In W7 (and W8) you can allow the Windows Update service through the outbound firewall and it will work just fine. Since W8.1 and W10 that method no longer works and you have to add the entire svchost.exe file. Which is obviously undesirable.

A small thing but it bugs me none the less.

I'm currently on W7 but it's OEM locked to my now 6 year old PC and I need a new copy for my new PC. Is there some kind of /g/ approved idiot-proof guide to successfully pirating and installing W7 or W10 (Idc which one)? I have no experience with that kind of thing.

I installed Win10 on my Dell Mini1020 (pic related). With XP, it was extremely usable. Not the fasted thing on the block and it choked on H264 video (I'm getting a hardware h426 accelerator for a few bucks soon), but good for general use and especially handy as a second laptop to manage my client's environments.

With Win7 on it, it slowed a bit but was still reasonably usable. Still, I preferred the extra speed I got from it but in order to get the Win10 update I had to be on 7...

Win10 was a steaming pile of shit on my netbook. EVERYTHING took several minutes to launch. Launching Firefox could take upwards of 2-3 minutes just to open. There was CONSTANT churning of the hard drive, there was almost never a point where the CPU wasn't pinned at 100% usage. Moving a window across the screen would cause severe performance issues.

Against my wishes both my wife and two of my kids installed Win10 on their machines (two core i3 laptops and a dual core pentium desktop). All of them have issues.

I switched my netbook back to WinXP and it's running just fine again,

original Starcraft? 'cause my Win7 machines all have it installed and it works just fine.

How can you call it a menu when it doesn't provide access to any functionality ?
That button just shows the labels for the little icons on the left, and that's it. It's not a menu. It's just as useless and annoying as most of MS's other shitty little hamburger buttons that serve the same purpose.

>> No.56082352

I like it because if you don't recognize the icons it gives you a quick and efficient run down of them, then when you have memorized them, it just stays out of the way and you don't have to worry about it.

Everyone into gaming carries Win10 in some form, be it VM or Dual boot. For everything else, there's Linux... there's no good reason for consumers to keep Win7 around.

>> No.56083675

Microsoft has stated that the performance on 10 should be on par or close to Win7, especially after the update that was released in Nov/Dec. (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/massive-windows-10-update-could-turbo-charge-windows-7-machines-says-microsoft/). I installed that update, my machine ran even slower. I chalked it up to maybe being 32 bit instead of 64, so I tossed Win7-64 on my netbook and did the upgrade again, then the massive update. Still ran like a constipated turtle shitting molasses.
