Nothing wrong with that, there're quite some OSs with subscriptions (but annualy). Call me when this applies to customer version.

>> No.55576635

Microsoft already offers Windows as a service for enterprise clients (much like it does Office 365), and we already had news of a subscription concept that was being patched in, so this is not surprising at all.

>That cost will be $7 per user per month but the good news is it only applies to enterprises, for now. The new pricing tier will be called “Windows 10 Enterprise E3” and it means Windows has finally joined Office 365 and Azure as a subscription service.
That branding sounds like they're probably not even going to drop the regular non-subscription Enterprise distributions, the same way they still sell Office as a stand-alone product.

>> No.55577160

This is actually not bad for a small business.

First of all, Enterprise is the only usable version of Windows 10. You have 10x more control over shit than any other version and you can actually turn shit off for the most part, including actually stopping updates and even a Long Term version that won't get bi-yearly major updates.

The biggest problem with the current Enterprise model for small businesses is that the Volume Licensing system is a pain in the ass to use and is way too expensive if you aren't buying 100+ licenses.

$7 flat each is a far better option.

That's exactly what I suspected looking into it further, though I can't find a licensing rate for 10 Enterprise, it sounds great for a small business.

I also can't really see them discontinuing "regular" Enterprise any time soon, feels like the subscription model isn't really conducive to potentially unreliable network connections or security practices like air-gapping that you might see in a large business.

>> No.55577268

>though I can't find a licensing rate for 10 Enterprise

Because currently with the shit Volume Licensing system you need to register and find a "provider service" that is licensed to sell you licenses. Each of those services charge differently You can't just buy the fucking thing directly, it's a garbage system.

This isn't enough to get enterprise to move away from windows. Hell they could charge by the minute of owning a license and it still wouldn't be enough.

What is interesting to know is just how a 'user' is defined. My shop has over 16,000 people in AD, and yet lots of them are simply clocking in and out and dont really have a device issued to them. and then you have the operations team that have 3 to 7 accounts each. granted when you have 16k accounts an extra 70 or so isn't too bad, but it is still a question of what qualifies as a user

Announcing the Apple iProduct.

|| Apple iProduct. You'll buy it. And you'll like it.
Do you like Apple products? Do you live for every product announcement, every incremental upgrade, every rumor and fake screenshot? Do you wank and blare and drone and fucking gurgle about Apple products morning, noon, and night? Then get ready for iProduct. You'll be blown away. No matter what it is.

|| The power to buy anything - and feel good about it.
Will it be merely an incremental improvement? Will we simply increase the storage capacity of an existing product and increase the price? Or will we remove features and capacity and reduce the price? It doesn't matter. We'll still trumpet it as a brand new product, and you'll buy it. You know you'll want it. And you know you'll pay big for it. Steve Jobs could take a dump, put it in an off-white plastic case, add two grey buttons and a small LCD display, and you'd pay $600 for it. Just fucking admit it.

|| What is it?
We're not saying yet. But we know that won't stop you. Post at length about it on every message board you have access to. Come up with fake product photos and post them, too. Start rumors or deny them. Compare it with existing products, even though you don't know what you're comparing them to.

|| When can I get it?
Relax, hipster, we'll tell you when it's ready. And you'll tell everybody else. Whether they care or not. You'll clog every blog, forum, and message board in the known universe with product photos, testimonials, and praise for Apple. And the complaints and insults you recieve are just proof that you're right.

|| How much will it cost?
Like you care. As you already know, it'll be twice as expensive as other companies' products with comparable features. But that doesn't matter, does it? No matter how much it costs, you'll feel special because you've bought an Apple product. If you forget how special you are, just look at your credit card statement.

Apple iProduct.
Your life. In a small, plastic case.

I'd like to point out that Apple was a failure as far back as the Apple 2. The BASIC on the machine sucked, and they had to get Microsoft's version to do floating point math.

Apple got Microsoft to make applications for the initial Macs.

Apple continues to rely on Microsoft to make applications for the Mac so that they can remain competitive in the business arena.

Apple would be a dead company by now had Microsoft not bailed them out with a ton of money in the late 90's.

Apple said PowerPC was superior to x86 technology, but now they use Intel.

Apple said their OS was faster and more secure that Windows, but then they switched to unix with a flashy interface.

Seriously, Apple is run by a lunatic of a man who wants everything his way and only his way. This is why there's always been disaterously retarded hardware and software aspects over the years. One button mouse, window buttons at the top left, single file menu at the top in the day of true multitasking, etc etc etc. Apple is living in the 80's, on modern hardware.

What have we learned here? Modern-day Apples are overpriced Linux boxes with a flashy shell. The end.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Windows 10, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

A US judge, presiding over a trial for copyright infringement, recognized that “piracy” and “theft” are smear words.

>but muh games.
The following is pasta but:
Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?
