54158922 No.54158922 [Reply] [Original] [archived.moe] [rbt]

I'm going to do it fuckers, Intel doesn't have anything that can compete with the FX 8 cores when it comes to game streaming/footage capture or virtual machine work.

Is there any reason not to go AMD for my use case? An i5 is too expensive for me and not worth the loss in thread count.

Is there any news about AM4 before I buy this thing?

the last acceptable time to buy am3 was when they were selling quad core 3.2ghz clocked processors for $50

AMD cores =/= Intel cores. AMD cores share resources, it's almost like hyperthreading. A modern i5 will absolutely destroy an fx chip senpai.

>> No.54159049

Not if I'm using all 8 threads though, I plan to do a GPU passthrough sometime, so I'll have 4 for the main linux OS, and 4 passed through with a video card to a windows OS for gaming

>> No.54159067

The board is only 70 and comes with USB 3.1 and an M.2 slot, it's a pretty good deal, same with the 8300 CPU they just released to the west, it turbos to 4.2ghz and only has a 95W TDP

>> No.54159112

>AMD cores =/= Intel cores. AMD cores share resources, it's almost like hyperthreading. A modern i5 will absolutely destroy an fx chip senpai.
No it won't. An i7 sure but not an i5, at least not in multi-core performance. At worst an i5 will match an 8-core FX processor in multi-core performance.

However OP I advise you wait for Zen. It's 8-core variant chip is likely to have around i7-5960X multi-core performance. Maybe build a cheap A8-7600 FM2+/AM1 build to entertain you until zen arrives. That's what I'm planning to do anyway.

>> No.54159142

I have a 750K, it just doesn't have enough threads for me, but the performance is fine for me per core, so the 8300 would be pretty much identical, just with twice the threads.

I can always buy an AM4 board later, maybe wait for AM4+ even, because you know that shit's coming soon after like with FM2.

And then I don't have to worry about my PC and I can save up for like really high end shit

>> No.54159268

>And then I don't have to worry about my PC and I can save up for like really high end shit
Yeah just wait it out man, have faith in AMD 1 last time. AMD could go bankrupt if Zen does not deliver so I'm certain AMD worked very hard on Zen and base Jim did everything he could to make Zen as amazing as possible. I'm hoping the 8-core Zen chip will cost at least half as much as the ~$1,000 i7-5960X.

There's a number of games already supporting DX12 and more incoming later on.

>a logical person would understand that having more cores doesn't make a better chip

That depends on what it is running under.

Under DX11, it dumps all the workload onto the first core and barely does shit with all the other cores. DX11 uses 4 cores at most and doesn't even use them efficiently.

Under DX12, it actually spreads the workload among all your cores and it has a more well spread of workload among all your cores. This is why DX12 is such a big deal and how amd processors can actually keep up with intel processors in DX12. So for dx12, more cores is actually better.

Graph related and it's true for Intel processors as well as AMD despite being a AMD graph.
