I don't "switch" and have no strong preference, I just buy something what fits in my budget and performs well. It's about time I upgrade from GTX660 (which still works great, inb4 >1.5 GB), looking at R9 380/380 X.

Thinking of building a PC based on an athlon A for someone for xmas, are the performances really there for basic office and graphic stuff, compared say, to a level entry I5?

>> No.51791637

built a budget pc for a friend. used an a10 and was surprised how well it works. was a bit skeptical. he just does a little gaming and doesnt care about maxing out settings. pairing with fast ram is a must to get the most out of the a series. i tried throttling the ram back to 1600 and 2000 before uping it to 2400. big difference on 3dmark performance. not a big deal these days getting fast ram, it's cheap. i used 8gb of gskill trident x 2400 for the a10. for any serious gaming, i love the 8350 or 6300. add a coolermaster 212 or similar with good paste for both a and fx series for a little extra thermal headroom. currently gaming with 8350 and xfx 390 both stock settings, and couldnt be happier.

>> No.51791647

390 ~= 970 and mine isnt even overclocked

>> No.51791723

That is just one game though. If you check the recent performance summaries, the R9 390 is faster overall.
(there's no 390 on techpowerup's reviews, but it performas the same as the 290X).

390 > 970
Fixed that for you.
And as VRAM requirements increase in the next few years, DX12 becomes widely used, and Nvidia gimps Maxwell after releasing Pascal just like they're doing with Kepler now, it will quickly become 390 >>>>> 970.

No. Even the Athlon 860K can't match the entry level i5-4460 (3.2 GHz) in multi-core performance. The Athlon 860k outperforms all desktop i3s though.

I would get an A8/A10 APU instead, better bang-for-the-buck. They have really nice iGPUs. The A8-7600 is like $90 and can play vydias on medium 720p settings well. The iGPU can also be used for hardware acceleration on programs like MPC-HC too. You just need to make sure to buy 2 sticks of at least 1866 MHz RAM and put them in dual channel mode on the motherboard to get good FPS on games.

Consoles have VRAM in abundance now. While they many hold games back in other factors, the VRAM-depending ones, specially textures, will not be held back.
Also, even with consoles holding games back VRAM requirements still increase. Back in 2007 in Crysis days, 512 MB was plenty for 1080p gaming. By the time the new consoles were released, 1 GB was already not enough for 1080p gaming, and 2 GB was becoming the norm.

>factory overclocked
Are you retarded?
Efficiency improvements in manufacturing is not the same as overclocking, dumbass. The 290 and 390 have the same TDP and similar power consumption. You still get the usual overclocking headroom over a stock 390 just as you would over a stock 290.

>No proof
Proof is written right before that phrase, if you bother to read and comprehend it.

>The Athlon 860k outperforms all desktop i3s though
No, it does not. It doesn't even outperform an overclcoked Pentium, which in turn doesn't outperform the Core i3.

>> No.51791982

Why would you get an APU now when next year we get DDR4 compatible APUs?

>> No.51791985

None of 970 are stock in reviews because they are already running boost clocks. 390 is mostly 290 with higher clocks but it also overclocks beyond and better than the average 290 so it's non issue.

AMD is fucking garbage. Everything they make is absolutely, objectively crappy as shit and only a fat neckbeard would buy this shit-tier crappy shit because he's afraid of running out of autismbux (because God forbid he spend less money on Taco Bell and Mountain Dew.) I tried building an AMD gaming rig once and it was the worst experience of my life. First off, that CPU clip is fucking impossible to use. It looks just like an old Pentium CPU clip, but it's autistically retarded and I couldn't deal with it. And the graphics card was so fucking huge, I had to cut a hole all the way around my case to fit it in. Fucking AMD.

But wait, that's not even the best part! When I tried to start up my shitty autismbox (which I sold to the Association of Retarded Citizens BTW) the absolutely massive power draw dimmed every light in my house and throughout the entire neighborhood like I was firing up fucking ENIAC in the 1920s or some bullshit. I had plenty of time to worry about my power bill too, because this shitty thing couldn't figure out which of its 32 CPU cores to use and it took half a day to boot. As soon as I tried to play a game (fucking Starcraft from 1998), it lagged so hard it went backwards. I thought I should try downloading a driver, but there aren't any. There are no fucking drivers. What the shit, AMD? No wonder Apple doesn't use your shit. It wasn't long after that that I realized this thing was putting out more heat than a goddamn jet engine and it burned my house down.

Two weeks later, when I sold that piece of shit, I built an Intel/Nvidia rig! Holy shit, it's like jacking into the Matrix! I built it 5 years ago and it still runs every game in 4K at 240 FPS while using no power and it actually cools my house during the summer. the 970 easily outperforms the 390 if you compare them equally (factory oc vs factory oc)

in fact, the 970 scales so much better with even just a factory OC that it performs on par with the 390x, not a 390.

it still makes no sense to compare them considering the 290 hasn't been sold new for nearly 6 months now, the reference 970 has pretty much not been sold since 1-2 months after it's introduction as well.

i suppose this is mostly the reviewers at fault rather than the resident AMD shills, nobody seems to review cards that you would actually buy and instead they review the reference cards they get sent when a card launches.

Where does it perform on par with an OC'ed 390X? I posted a recent source with 17 games (>>51797727) where a 1266mhz 970 barely beats the 1000mhz 390, how hard is this to understand?

>the date that review was published on has nothing to do with the fact that the 970 is objectively a better performing and better value card over the 390.

Yes it has, because there might've been some driver updates with improvements, and it also doesn't even list the 390s - not to mention just being one game, which is nowhere near enough sample size - my point still stands. (The rest of the review doesn't include the shown custom OC.)

Oh, this again...
Okay m8, let's analyze our sources:

Your source has 5 titles, 4 of them being Nvidia Gameworks titles with a clusterfuck of settings on the upper benchmarks (sometimes lower ones on the 970), and even the "Apple to Apple" comparison also including specific options, such as High on TW3 with Hairworks on low, but GTA V pretty much being Ultra presets with FXAA.

My source >>51797727 has 18 titles, 3 of the hardocp ones included. (GTA V, TW3, Far Cry 4) 15 additional titles with both several Gameworks and Gaming Evolved titles included. TW3 and Far Cry 4 also show the 970 being nowhere near a 390X - but they're also using different settings (The GTA V result is similar), mostly presets and 1080p (Where Maxwell is actually supposed to perform even better, actually):

Your source looks pretty cherrypicked for me. I also have more games, and if we speak about reputation, Computerbase is one of the most reputable hardware sites in germany, so no bullshit there. On page visits Alexa shows it being ranked 4262, opposed to hardocp's 22222:

On top of that, here's some other sources on the 970 vs 390 topic, and these are just some with an average index score:

AMDs CPUs are dogshit.

Anyone telling you otherwise is a fucking deluded fanboy.

Sure AMDs CPUs at below 100 can compete with intel because they have more cores but as soon as you enter i5 4460 territory and go beyond AMD is non existent. So sure if you're poor and have to buy a FX 6350 or X4 860K go for it. I myself built such a PC from my 5 year old nephew. Also in that PC I got an AMD GPU a R7 370.

But if you wanna be anywhere near any games today a i5 4460 is a must.

Now AMDs GPUs are another story and they pretty much outcompete Nvidia at every level except the 980Ti one.

I myself got a R9 390 over a 970. But really they're equal and I would have gladly went with the 970 if it was cheaper at my shop then a R9 390 but it was 20€ more expensive.
