Disappointing. When installing to the vm I was told to use syslinux to make my 4 partitions.

The process was to set a 250mb boot, 6gb swap, 110gb root and 203gb home partitions. Write them. Format to ext4 and swap. Swapon. mount root. cd /mnt. mkdir boot home in mnt. mount boot and home in there. and then install.

Something must have gotten screwed up there? All partitions are showing with ls /dev

>> No.51710164

Well apparently your home directory is actually there, seeing as though you got an output.

Could you show me lsblk, and then ls -a /home ?

Also, syslinux is a bootloader and making seperate home partitions is kind of dumb in 2015 unless you actually have multiple physical disks and you can't run RAID 0 or something. I mean, even so it's easier just to symlink pictures, videos etc to a folder on that drive so it's easily removable and flexible.

You made the directory? That isn't right at all.

Okay, we're gonna have to go back a long while further here. How did you make your user?

Honestly, at this point I'd say type "su", then type 'useradd -m -g users -G wheel archie', replacing archie with the name of a new user account.

Then type passwd archie, set the password.

After, type exit a bunch until you're at the login screen and login to archie.

The -m flag on that previous command tells it to make a home directory for you and sets permissions for that user, hence why you shouldn't ever need sudo to copy to/from your home and never need to even make the directory in the first place - none of your programs will read from it.

To me it sounds like you seriously messed up creation of the austin account.

>> No.51710367

its ok, it fits my needs well

its basically just the chrome browser with a desktop attached, there is no package manager and you have to install a sub-par substitute called chromebrew, sudo doesnt have full privileges and theres no chance in hell that you could install a different DE, WM or anything else like that.

However, with Crouton it is incredibly easy to install a linux partition on it. Its like 1 command and it downloads and install crouton, then makes an Ubuntu XFCE partition you can enter from ChromeOS. Its pretty neat

for a 99$ laptop, i cant complain

>> No.51710506

Yus, okay that looks good. Now you can run the cp command

You can login as root run
userdel -r Austin

and then follow my earlier steps to recreate the user if you want

The idea behind it is that startx first searches /home/user/ for xinitrc and uses it if it finds it, if not, it falls back on /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and uses that instead.

xinitrc is a simple bash script that executes a set of checkup commands, + anything else you might want to put in there, and finishes once it finds an "exec" command.

Exec awesome would start awesome window manager.

Your ~/.xinitrc file should look like

Awesome WM configuration is done through a lua RC file and a couple of other things. I'd suggest you start here

just as usual, cp /etc/xdg/awesome/rc.lua .config/awesome/rc.lua

You'll need to create .config and awesome directories. Then hit ctrl shift q, run startx again and you can configure from that file.

I honestly have no idea about resolution on a VM sorry. Good luck anon :3

I like the dock Its no different really then the size bar for gnome or the windows task bar. Applications folder can act as an application quick browser if you want it to. But i like the task bar because I can see what is open simply and be able to click them to mess around or I can do a simple mouse click and key combo to shrink them to the left corner or hide them. I also put the tools I use most commonly and so i use all the different IDES in classes and I use Photoshop and Lightroom for photography of events I cover for a tech blog. I also use Premiere to edit videos often as I like my controls in it. Just starting to learn how to use Docker. For web dev stuff i'm doing I have all the browsers setup to test crap and well I JUST FREAKING LIKE IT!!!

>Download the latest source at https://github.com/KittyKatt/screenFetch

>In a terminal, make the file executable by doing the following: chmod +x /path/to/screenfetch/screenfetch-dev

>Then, either keep it there, or move it to somewhere in your $PATH to make it available without having to use the full path to the script.

This is Fedora, not Ubuntu.

My man, please tell me how do I achieve this from barebone gnome-shell

>> No.51714441

Numix theme for icons and gtk. Theres a gnime shell theme on gnome look that makes the gnome shell get the Numix style. You need the extension "Dash to Dock" and "User themes". I tweaked a bit of the CSS of the gnome shell theme to give me a drop shadow on the top bar, as well as a purple dock. In the dash to Dock settings, you have to extend the dock to the entire screen and lower the opacity.
You can find the Numix project by googling it.
The wallpaper is the default Ubuntu 15.10 wallpaper.
