I'm actually a macfag, I love my macbook and generally I actually like apple. But this is stupid, I do like though how they say "Most future proof mac ever"
spoiler alert: it's as (hell probably not even quite as) future proof as a regular desktop now and that's a big accomplishment for a mac.

They're basically two 7870 with different drivers and much more support. In games however, they would perform similar as two normal 7870, or maybe even a bit worse. Work station cards are generally worse for gaming than their gamer GPU equivalent. It's even more extreme the other way around though.

The turntable is a Beogram RX, made by Bang&Olafson, that was purchased in the early '80s. The receiver is an Onkyo NR-626, which does have PHONO inputs, and a grounding screw. Problem is that I can get no sound out of the speakers.
The turntable had been sitting in our garage for about 12 years. It spins fine, and no visible dirt, and there is a faint sound that comes from the turntable itself. I thought it might have been the RCA pins, as they were corroded and oxidized, so I bought some new male RCA pins, and soldered them on. Still no sound out of the speakers. I assume that there is some fault in the electronics inside the turntable, but I'm not sure what to look for. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
The manual for the reciever seems to say that this style of turn-table should not require a pre-amp, as the receiver can handle it.

How would you upgrade this?
As far as I can see the only thing that looks like I could by another part to the same spec is the ram, but fuck trying to fit in any one of those sticks with a heat sink.
What you've got here is a system that's locked down by design. Physical design because it's so tightly packed that nothing else will even fit in it.
This is a machine that's made to contain precisely machine PCB's. It's un-upgradable not because of technical reasons but because of manufacturing constraints.
Basically it removes the idea of adding a generic component to it because it's all cut into weird shapes. No matter if you can take it apart is that cpu removable or soldered on? Can I replace the mobo without solder and a band saw? No.
So not upgradable at all. Shits in the face of standards and makes hardware proprietary by means of shape.
Good going apple.

LOL

To upgrade it, you will need to buy proprietary parts that fit its form factor, which will be designed by apple in califbornya and made in china, and cost made on the moon prices.

This means that it is actually less future proof than a standard desktop PC, as any normal part will go into a standard desktop PC without needing to be cropped down to fit inside of a used maxi pad canister turned computer. In practice, the only thing that is "future proof" in the new iMaxiCan is the power supply and case, so long as apple continues to release parts for the same revision case/power supply.

Apple convinces hundreds of thousands to part with their cash in droves, apple wins again, consumers lose again.

This is the first year we have to admit that Apple has produced a high end workstation that dominates that market space, not just in performance (which we've all reluctantly come to accept) but also bang for the buck.

I have no idea what PC workstation OEMs are doing. They're going to spend the next two quarters playing catch up. At least this market segment is incredibly small so it won't be anything as bad as how the iPad dominated tablets for two full years before the Android OEM tablet makers got their shit together.

Even if you hate Apple you have to admit, they wont this one. Hand down. No argument. I'm as surprised as you are.

> Apple has produced a high end workstation that dominates that market space, not just in performance (which we've all reluctantly come to accept)

BULLSHIT.

Firstly, Apple isn't even a major player in the workstation market. Take a look at JPR Workstation Report 3Q2013:

http://jonpeddie.com/press-releases/details/workstations-continue-solid-growth-pace-in-q313-jon-peddie-research/

The four big players are:
HP - 41.9%
Dell - 32.0%
Lenovo - 13.7%
Fujitsu - 3.7%

The rest collectively take up 8.7%.

Secondly, the Mac Pro is at the low-end of the workstation market in terms of performance. Take a comparison against the new Dell Precision T5610/T7610 workstations.

The biggest difference of all is that the Mac Pro is a single CPU machine, while the Dell 5610/7610 are dual CPU machines. It obviously gives the Dells an edge when it comes to raw CPU power, but it also gives the Dells many more RAM slots and internal PCIe lanes to work with.

The RAM is the next big difference. Mac Pros only have 4 slots, while the T5610s have 8 and the T7610s have 16. The T5610 is configurable up to 128 GB 1866 MHz ECC, while the the T7610 is configurable to 256 GB ECC upon release (with 512 GB ECC configurations coming soon). If I had to guess, I'd say that the new Mac Pro would max out at 64 GB at 4 slots. Technically 32 GB ECC DDR3 DIMMs exist, but they're prohibitively expensive at around $1,000 per module for 1600 MHz (I've yet to see 32 GB 1866 MHz ECC). Apple may release 128 GB configs around the same time Dell releases 512 GB configs.

The next issue is the GPU. The Dell T5610 can take up to two graphics cards, selected from Nvidia Quadro K600/K2000/K4000/K5000 and AMD FirePro V4900/W5000/W7000. T7610 can take up to three from the same range. The Nvidia Tesla K20C is also available, with at most one in the T5610 and at most two in the T7610.The Dell T7610 also has options for an Intel Xeon Phi 3120A PCIe card and up two Quadro K6000s.

The Mac Pro offers two AMD FirePro GPUs, effectively selected from W7000/W8000/W9000. The lack of Nvidia options is alarming, considering that CUDA and Nvidia dominate the workstation market, taking 80.4% share in 2Q2012:
http://jonpeddie.com/press-releases/details/the-workstation-market-remained-sluggish-in-q212-reports-jon-peddie-researc/
Moreover, AMD's W8000/W9000 has done poorly in comparison to the Quadro, as per reports:
http://hothardware.com/Reviews/AMDs-New-FirePro-W8000-W9000-Challenge-Nvidias-Quadro/?page=9
The worst part about this all is that even if you wanted to use an Nvidia Quadro or Tesla or even a Xeon Phi with a Mac Pro, you'd be forced to use a Thunderbolt 2.0 PCIe chassis, which would be bottle-necked to a measly two lanes of PCIe 3.0.

Storage is a harder comparison to make because little is really known. Internally, the Mac Pros only have room for PCIe SSD storage with 1.25 GB/s sequential read. The Dell offers room for either 4 2.5" or 3 3.5" drives, which can be picked from 7200/10K/15K HDDs or SATA SSDs. There's also a PCIe SSD option from Dell, namely a Micron P320h 350 GB with 1.75 GB/s sequential read. Thunderbolt allows for external storage on the Mac Pros, but so do PCIe RAID cards on the Dells.

As far as peripherals go, there are 10 external USB ports, 2 PS2, 2 RJ45, and 1 serial on the Dell, while there are 4 external USB, 2 RJ45, and 6 Thunderbolt on the Mac Pro. There are options for internal sound cards, media readers, and BD/DVD drives in the Dells.

This is a problem with workstations in general, not just the Mac Pro.

Individual pricing is extremely inflated with workstation hardware because the large majority of purchasing is in volume.

It's difficult to DIY a cheaper workstation for any manufacturer, especially low-end workstations like the Mac Pro.

For high-end workstations, demand lowers, and volume-purchasing benefits decrease with lower volume. This raises prices for high-end workstations, meaning it's easier to DIY blazing high-end workstations for cheaper.

A similar phenomenon is observed in the consumer market, in which low-end computers are hard to DIY for cheaper, while high-end computers are easy to DIY for cheaper.

The reason so many sites shill isn't because Apple throws moneys.

A journalist revealed the reason a while ago, it's a problem with many companies, but Apple in particular because of its popularity.

Basically, to get the latest Apple scoops, journalists have to be invited to the Apple conferences.

For journalists from a site to get invites, the site generally must not publish anti-Apple stories.

Because of Apple's popularity, they can passively demand sites to be pro-Apple, lest they miss out on the latest Apple news by not getting invites.

"The practice of using unbranded peripherals in computers is common. Apple does this and carries things a step further by demanding that components, such as the SSDs, are proprietary to a specific build only. Not only can the SSD in Apple’s new Mac products not be upgraded with third-party SSDs, but also, they can’t even be switched off with SSDs of previous Apple releases. The only reason to have PCIe was to circumvent the SATA III bandwidth limit for sequential I/O.

Other laptops before the Air haven't used PCIe to bypass the limit, but have instead used RAID.

For example, Dell Precision Mobiles could RAID 0 three SSDs, achieving 1,500 MB/s sequential r/w. TRIM works because the chipset is Intel.

Irrelevant arguments about this workstation trying to overthrow companies with 40%+ market share.

Really it's funny how hard you guys grasp at straws. Some guy in this thread thought Apple would underclock workstation GPU's for a 40% difference in computing power. Did you make that up? I'm sure you did.

Don't even ask about stuff that you cannot properly name.

It's "Thunderbolt", and just because Apple puts their super-fancy PCI-E 3.0 passthrough port and only that port on their machine doesn't mean that I have to do that too.
It's expensive as fuck to license (and implement) in any device, thus limiting the number of manufacturers who can make these accesories; and since there are about as many unique thunderbolt devices on the market as there are ports on the Mac Pro, the profit margin is as high as they want to be.
